Nero 5th Anniversary SSR

Card Story: An umbrella for the never-ending rain

Chapter 1

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor- Courtyard , Daytime)

Akira: Oh, Nero! Is now a good time?

Nero: Oh, Ms. Sage. What’s up?

Akira: Actually, I have a favor to ask you. Would you be willing to do another interview? Now that I’ve spent some time in this world and gotten to know everyone better, I wanted to speak with everyone again and update the Sage’s Journal.

Nero: You’re as serious as ever, huh? I might not have anything too exciting to tell ya, but if you’re okay with that…

Riquet: Nero! It’s terrible!

Nero: Riquet?

Akira: What’s wrong? You look so panicked…

Riquet: Mitile and I were making pancakes and the batter just kept expanding and expanding until the pan was overflowing… at this rate we are going to drown in pancakes!

Akira: What…!

Nero: Did ya use the powder in the back right cupboard by any chance? The one in the red paper bag?

Riquet: We did… was it not regular flower?

Nero: That’s Puffnut Powder*. When ya mix it with eggs, it’ll expand basically infinitely. If ya add water from a stream that’s been exposed to sunlight it’ll stop though…

Mitile: Riqueeet! It still isn’t stop- woah?!

Akira: Oh no! Nero, Riquet, I’ll help too!

Nero: Sorry, but can I count you two? I need ya to hurry and get water from the river in the forest!

Akira and Riquet: On it!

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor- Dining Hall , Daytime)

Akira: Sigh, what a relief… we were able to stop it somehow…

Nero: It was a close one… a little while longer and we’d’ve lost the kitchen to pancakes…

Faust: Ah, there you are! Nero, and the Sage too. Would you lend me a hand? Shino and Heath started arguing and they’ve gotten out of control.

Akira: Oh dear…

Nero: Aren’t those two regularly going at it? Isn’t it fine to just let them get it outta their systems?

Faust: No… it started over something small, but neither of them are willing to back down so things are slowly getting more serious. I don’t want this to get more complicated and end up affecting class tomorrow.

Nero: Got it, got it. They really are childhood friends, aren’t they…

Akira: Ahaha, I’ve heard that the more you fight with someone the closer you are to them.

Faust and I follow after the still-grumbling Nero.

Akira: (Everyone relies on Nero, calling out to him, and Nero always responds like it’s natural. Back when we all first got here, he was so reluctant to move into the Manor… I’m kind of happy to see him like this now.)

Chapter 2:

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor- Hallway, Afternoon)

Nero: I’m beat… pretty hard to calm things when they’re both so stubborn. Sorry, Ms. Sage, I’ve been pretty much dragging ya around all day.

Akira: No, not at all! It looks like things have calmed down, but even if we were to talk now…

Bradley: Hey, Nero!

Nero: What do ya want!? Save it for later!

Bradley: Huh? What’re ya even so mad about? Whatever, this is the example I was tellin ya about earlier. I’ve got a great idea, lemme hear yer thoughts on it.

Nero: Idiot! Right in front of the Sage?!

Akira: Is this something private? Umm, should I cover my ears?

Nero: Ya don’t have to do that! Brad, I’m busy right now. I’ll head to yer room later, so just wait.

Nero pushed Bradley’s back like he was kicking him out, and Bradley reluctantly left, despite his complaints.

Nero: Sigh… sorry, Ms. Sage.

Akira: Don't worry about it. In any case, I’m impressed.

Nero: Impressed?

Akira: Everyone relies on you… that’s how much you’re trusted, Nero.

Nero: Trust, huh…?

Akira: (…oh…)

Seeing Nero’s bitter smile, I suddenly remembered what he told me long ago. The last time I interviewed him, he closed his eyes and warned me: “Please don’t trust me”.

Akira: … Umm… just now… I didn’t mean it like that…

While I stammered, Nero tilted his head. He understood what I meant immediately, laughing softly.

Nero: I told ya before, didn’t I? Please don’t trust me. But, how should I say it… a lot’s changed since then. We shouldn’t stand around talking, would ya like to head to my room for now?

(Location: Central Country, Magic Manor- Nero’s Room, Evening)

Nero: Here ya go. Careful not to eat too much before dinner.

Nero stood next to the chair I sat on, offering me cold tea and a small plate of light snacks; each one of them something I once praised him for, telling him it was delicious.

Akira: Thank you, I’ll savor them.** … and… about what we were talking about earlier…

Nero: Oh, right.

I heard ice clinking as he leaned on the kitchen table, swirling his own glass of tea.

Nero: …I’m a cowardly, heartless, irresponsible guy. I’m always happy to be relied on, but I can’t ever give anything back to the guys who do. That’s why, though the root of the problem won’t ever change… right now, I’d feel a bit lonely if you guys didn’t trust me.

Akira: Nero…

Chapter 2:

(Location: Central Country, Magic Manor- Nero’s Room, Evening)

Nero: Just joking.

He scratched the back of his head, shrugging embarrassedly.

Nero: …Before I knew it, I guess I got used to “Nero,” and being called “Nero” every once in a while. Every time you guys call for me, I feel like I have to respond properly.

Nero’s voice was calm as he spoke; the corners of his mouth even rose in a smile. But I could see a faint shadow looming over every part of his face.

Peering up at the open sky, it seemed he was the only one soaked by the guilty rain pouring down from it.

Akira: …You said someday you might betray us all. You still feel that way?

Nero: Haha, more or less. You catch on pretty well, Ms. Sage.

Akira: …When you told me last time, I wrote it down in the Sage’s Journal.

Nero: Did you? I’m still unsure about it, sorry about that.

His kind face, still damp from the rain, smiled a little sadly.

Akira: Not at all…

I clasped my hands in my lap, something like Nero’s loneliness crouched inside me.

Akira: …As I’ve gotten to know you all little by little after coming to this world, I’ve grown to like you all. That’s why I try to face the things that happen every day; so I can be trusted by everyone not just as a Sage, but as Akira. But I’m still inexperienced and there are so many things that don’t go well… that’s when I get worried. Am I living up to the trust everyone places in me? Am I worrying*** them…? That’s why, even though they’re different, I think I can understand your feelings somewhat.

I wanted to hold out an umbrella for him, so I picked up the words, repeating them one by one as Nero listened quietly.

Nero: You’re not making us nervous or anything. You always respond as best you can, so much so that it makes people want to give ya a break… you’re definitely a kind person.

Akira: That… I want to be closer to you, even if just a little. After all, we’re friends.

Nero’s eyes widened for a moment, then slowly narrowed as slowly as the setting sun.

Nero: …Right.

Rays of sunset shone gently through the window, caressing his hair. The day’s**** sunset glowed with soft colors.

Nero: Speaking of which… are you recording this in the Sage’s Journal?

Akira: Yes, I was planning to…

Nero: What… that’s kinda embarrassing though…

Akira: Ahaha, then should we keep it a secret between the two of us?

Nero: Yeah, I’d appreciate that.

Even if that rain never stops pouring, we can still stay together.

Our eyes met, and we laughed secretly together.

Card Episode: What I can say to you now.

(Location: Central Country, Magic Manor- Kitchen, Morning)

Nero: Here, Ms. Sage, I made Temari Sushi.

Akira: That you very much. Wow, what cute decorations…! The vegetable slices are flower shaped and the colors are so beautiful!

Nero: I tried making it more like a salad using vegetables and beans so it can be eaten lightly. I tried lots of ingredient variations too, like chopping up herbs and mixing them.

Akira: It looks stylish and delicious, and the smell is making me hungrier. Nero, you’re really good at arranging food!

Nero: Thanks, I’ve gotten pretty used to cooking food from your world. It’s getting more and more interesting to add my own touches to things.

Akira: I’m really happy to hear you say that, but all the Japanese food you’ve made so far has been great, since your very first try. The first time, I could hardly believe it was foreign cuisine!

Nero: I’m surprised to hear that, since I didn’t know what the correct dish was supposed to be like. There were tons of ingredients, seasonings, and cooking methods I’d never heard of before. I actually found it pretty relaxing and ended up testing prototypes until morning.

Akira: Really…?! Even someone as skilled as Nero had to stay up all night practicing…

Nero: Yeah, I was doing it secretly ‘cuz I was embarrassed that anyone would find out I was trying so hard… keep quiet about that to everyone else, okay?

Translator’s Note:

*Literally ふっくらナッツパウダー

ふっくら(Plump/Fluffy/Puffy) + ナッツ(nut) + パウダー (powder), I chose Puffnut because the powder puffed up when mixed with eggs.

**セーブしつついただきますね。

セーブ should be a  cognate of save, but I extrapolated it to “savor” to make the meaning work since I’m a little confused and couldn’t find much online about it.

An alternative explanation I did find said that セーブcould refer to moderation or cutting down on something, so Akira could’ve been saying something like “I’ll eat in moderation” in response to Nero’s “don’t eat too much before dinner”, but I’m not sure.

If anyone has an answer, I’d appreciate it!

***Idk if I expressed this correctly but rather than worrying about her, it's supposed to be her worrying them by being unreliable. Akira’s stressed about whether or not people feel uneasy about her leading as the Sage. The kanji is 不安.

****Technically “Today’s sunset,” but I didn’t know how to make that work in the past tense.

Mahoyaku Jugoya 2024 Voice Lines:

Translator’s Note:

  • Jugoya literally means The 15th Night
    • 十五夜: 十 = Ju = 10, 五 = Go = 5, 夜 = yoru (ya) = night.
  • In the year 2024, Jugoya falls on September 17th.
  • According to Japan Unseen, this is because the historical callender marks Juugoya as August 15th, but the date changes every year using the Gregorian Calendar.

Central Wizards:

Oz: The moon tonight is so beautiful that it is disgusting.

Arthur: Perhaps I should refrain from saying this, however…there are times when I cannot help but admire that large moon…

Cain: I remember you saying this world’s moon is big. What’s it like having a sky with such a small moon?

Riquet: There is a clear view of the moon through the big dining room windows late at night. Would you like to come see it with me tonight?

Northern Wizards:

Snow: The fifteenth night is an evening to drink with the moon as a backdrop… I see, it seems there is yet another fun festival in store for us tonight.

White: Sage, I often see you often gaze up at the moon. I wonder if perhaps the moons we each see differ from one another.

Mithra: Sigh… I really will kill you one day.

Owen:  Why is it that the moon is feared by all? …Even though it's so beautiful.

Bradley: If that moon weren’t the “Great Calamity”, I’d’ve loved to try drinking to it.

Eastern Wizards:

Faust: Hmph, tonight seems to be another unnecessarily beautiful moonlight night.

Shino: I don’t think I can enjoy watching that calamity.

Heathcliff: Of course, I love the sight of sunlight filtering through the trees during the day, but the way the moon’s sunlight hits the leaves at night is lovely as well… Ah, “moon’s sunlight” doesn’t quite make sense does it…?

Nero: That's the “Great Calamity”; so pretty you can hardly believe it.

Western Wizards:

Shylock: For the troublesome man whose love for the moon destroyed him, it seems to be a joyful night.

Murr: It looks like the moon is pretty close today. But if you get too close, you’ll be pushed back.

Chloe: Do you think the moon has a family? Two “calamities” would be pretty scary, but sometimes I wonder if it ever gets lonely…

Rustica: Master Sage, I heard the moon in your world is quite small. Perhaps it is still a child?

Southern Wizards:

Figaro: Don’t you think tonight’s moon is abominably beautiful?

Rutile: The moon is shining more brightly than usual tonight. Despite the fact that it’s so beautiful, why…

Lennox: Something so beautiful robbed our companions of their lives… I don’t really want to think about it.

Mitile: The moon looks so pretty tonight! I’m a little scared, but for some reason I feel like making a wish.

Mahoyaku Children’s Day Voice Lines:

Central Wizards:

Oz: When I was young, I lost to the twins countless times. I was once sealed in an iceberg and abandoned there. The next morning, they came for me, saying “Poor thing, it must have been cold”. At the time, I questioned the point of locking me away but… … Even now, I still question it.

Arthur: When I was younger, I admired the way Sir Oz’s hair would flutter in the wind, and I wanted to grow out my own. At the time, I was told to refrain from doing so until I was powerful enough to protect myself, as parts of Wizard’s bodies can be used as mediums in spells, but… I wonder if it’s about time for me to match Sir Oz?

Cain: Was becoming a knight my childhood wish? Yeah, of course! … Is what I wish I could say, but it was pretty different when I was little. According to my Mom, my dream was to become bacon until I was about three years old. Why? ‘Cuz it’s delicious… Hey, don’t laugh!

Riquet: My childhood memories… I enjoyed the time I spent talking with the Head Priest. He taught me what I needed to know and what I should do. I wonder what he is thinking, now that we have been separated… … I hope he feels lonely when he thinks of me.

Northern Wizards:

Snow: The other day, I witnessed a child fall down and cry on the street. When I summoned sweets with my magic, her tears ceased and she smiled. The expressions young children wear are always innocent. They do not yet harbor hidden intentions. It is touching* to see.

*Due to the roots of the word 愛しい (Itoshii), it can have a double meaning of both beloved/dear and pitiful.

White: A strange child approached me on the street and offered a small flower as a token of gratitude. I thought her foolish for approaching a stranger but… it appears she was grateful for something Snow did for her to bring her back to her senses. This happens quite often. I think I will decorate our room with this flower for a while.

Mithra: I don’t have any particular childhood memories. All I had to do was transport the corpses on my boat… now that I’ve remembered, I want to pick it up again. Please play the role of a corpse. I’m going to take you to the other side of the shore and throw you there, so please roll over docilely.

Owen: I don’t have any childhood memories: I don’t remember anything… <Cur Memini>. Look, I’ve reverted the weak wizard’s hearts back to their childhood state, so go watch them. Most of the things children do are the same.

Bradley: When I was a kid, my human siblings were still kicking. Every time I did something, people complained. They were weak and annoying, but when I look at the manor’s kiddos… I remember them.

Eastern Wizards:

Faust: I don’t have any grand childhood stories. I simply did my best to play the role as the head of my household, with the support of the adults in my village. I’ve been told I was polite and hard-working, I don’t think I was very cute. …That can’t possibly be true? Haha, you’re quite kind.

Shino: My childhood memories aren’t great… No. Actually, there was a dream I had once ina. While that I liked. I was a rich man’s son. I went to nice restaurants with pocket money, had a nagging tutor, and fought with someone who was like my younger brother. That’s pretty nostalgic; I forgot about it until just now.

Heathcliff: When I was a kid… ah, no. I was remembering a friend: an irreplaceable friend whom I met in the Orangery of the courtyard of my parent’s home. Someday, I will definitely take Shino with me to visit that friend once more. When I do, you should come as well, Master Sage. Please, allow me to introduce you once more.

Nero: When I was a kid, huh… Well, I was born in a pretty bad place*. If I didn’t want to be abused and used by others, I had no choice but to be stringer than them. That’s probably why the first time someone praised me with “good job”… honestly, I barely understood what was happening.

*Literally: A place with bad manners

Western Wizards:

Shylock: Myself as a child? I loved the view from the top of the hill, and on sunny days I would stroll through the vineyards. At times, I would sneak grapes off the vines before the harvest… Even now I have not forgotten that fresh, sweet taste.

Murr: What I was like as a child… hmm, I wonder? That’s right, lets ask this Red Beryl*! After all, this is something I cut myself as a kid. I’m sure it will still remember me though, I was young. <Eanul Lambru>!

*A type of gem

Chloe: I cried pretty often when Rustica first found me, I’m sure it scared him. I mean, even when I ate delicious food, or wore beautiful clothes I cried. That’d surprise anyone, right? But each time, Rustica wiped my tears. That’s why, from now on, I’ll wipe his…

Rustica: I tend to be quite forgetful, so I can’t tell you much about my childhood… instead, why don’t I change to the age you wanted to know about? Whether it’s the age Chloe and I met as or younger… fufu, very well then: <Amor Est Viesse>.

Southern Wizards:

Figaro: I wasn’t very childish as a kid. Both adults and children relied on me, and I wanted to guide them in turn. I didn’t have a particularly childish childhood, but in that regard I’d say Oz and Mithra are quite similar to me. Don’t most Northern Wizards have stories like that?

Rutile: Aaah! Glasses! …Ah, I’m sorry, Mr. Leno. Earlier, Mr. Owen cast a spell on me that turned me back into a child. The spell was already broken, but for some reason I’ve become really scared of glasses… Oh, Mr. Faust. Aaah! More glasses!

Lennox: A story from my childhood… I started working in the coal mines when I was young, so I don’t have many interesting stories. …That’s right, I remember being told I had long legs and looking forward to growing as big as my father. I was so proud when I outgrew him. I’m sure my father felt the same.

Mitile: A portrait of me as a baby? …Ah, there is one, but I don’t want to show it to you. Because my head was so big as a baby… Mr. Figaro used to say it was “Rounder than the full moon” … Hey , Master Sage, please don’t laugh!

The True Meaning of Iron in the Blood of the Fallen:

Part 3:

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor, Common Room, Night Time)

Faust: So you’re already familiar with it, Sage. Shino also seems to have done a great job preparing.

At that time, the Valcy had spread its roots underneath the entire city, and was on the verge of annihilating it.

The person who stopped that was the Bernard Family’s head.

Mitile: Then, was he a wizard?

Shino: No, he was a human.

Mitile and Akira: What?!

Akira: Is it possible for humans to hunt monsters…?

Shino: Who knows. But that’s what the book says, anyways.

Arthur: The history books I have studied say the same.

I’d thought perhaps he had aquired the help of a Wizard or used some other means to gain an advantage, but there are no records of such events.

Faust: Not all history is recorded accurately: especially during times of chaos.

Humans cannot wield magic. Even if they chant words that appeal to the spirits, they will not respond.

In the end those words are just spells. Facing fierce magical beasts alone is beyond human capacity.

Akira: I see… has the story changed over time, then?

Shino: It’s a pretty common legend anyways. Actually it looks like he didn’t actually defeat the beast, just sealed it away.

This is what they used to cast it.

Shino traced the pages of the book in his hands.

In the page, there was a picture of a large object shaped like spread wings on a single solemn alter.

Mitile: is this where the Valcy is sealed?

Shino: Yeah. This is “The Medal of Sincerity”. The jewel in the middle is where the Vlacy is sealed.

It has a complicated structure with several layers of barriers and seals to stop it from breaking.

Apparently the duty of gaurding it has been passed down through generations of Bernard Family Heads.

Shino spoke quietly, like a child talking about their heroes.

He looked up at Faust, still standing behind him, with eyes full of anticipation.

Shino: Hey, Faust. If I ask that guy, do you think I can see the real thing?

Faust: That guy…? You mean the boy you caught earlier?

Mitile: The person who stole Murr’s wallet…?

I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet someone who does bad things like that.

Shino: I don’t think so.

Mitile: Why?

Shino: In order to survive, there are times when you can’t keep pretending. I was the same way.

Mitile was stunned speechless.

Shino’s back was straight and his eyes were clear. The pride of having survived all alone was reflected in his stance.

Shino: My dirty past won’t ever change, but I’m not the same person I was back then.

I want to see how impressive the medals handed down through the Bernard family are.

Someday, I want one that’s even cooler than all of them.

Mitile: Shino, I…

Shino: If you’re going to apologize, I won’t listen. You and I just have different ways of living.

Though his words sounded like they were pushing others away, they were clear, as if he was making a joke.

The air surrounding the two boys relaxed. The image of a boy in torn clothes standing among them came to mind.

Akira and Arthur: Aboyt that boy… ah.

Akira: I apologize for speaking over you. You were going to say something?

Arthur: Yes… he seemed quite concerned about the incidents in that city.

Faust: The serial attacks? Didn’t he mention that several incidents happened in quick succession?

Arthur: Yes. Somehow though… from the way he spoke, I think he might know something more about those incidents.

Shino: …? Does that mean he’s involved?

Arthur: It is not that I wish to doubt him, but he was the one who warned us not to stay in the city for fear of more casualties.

As a member of an esteemed family, it is possible he said this out of concern for the public good, but… as the victim in the situation, his phrasing struck me as odd.

Akira: That’s right…

Mitile: …In the first place, why is someone like him living like that?

If he was born to a family like that, shouldn’t he have a mansion and be admired by everyone…?

Shylock: It isn’t particularly uncommon for noble families to fall.

Just as there is no flower that does not wither, so too does glory never last.

Murr: Shylock is eloquent as always!

Akira: Shylock! And Murr too.

Shino: You guys sure like appearing out of nowhere.

Shylock: Fufu, I enjoy spending my time as I please.

Rather, it seems this is the perfect place to enjoy dessert after dinner.

Would you like some tea to go along with your sweets?

Murr: I want a drink! I’ve been upside down for so long I’m starting to get thirsty!

Shylock: have you tried turning around and pointing your head towards the ceiling? It’s likely because of the blood rushing to your head.

And Murr, you are the one offering the tea. We came here to apologize for the commotion the other day.

Murr: That’s right! Let’s have fun giving it out and have fun drinking it too!

Murr waved his finger and the tea poured out into several cups.

Faust: You’re not just here to apologize, Shylock. You were worried about the boy too, weren’t you?

Shylock: My, perceptive aren’t you?

The Bennet family is one family whose status slowly declined but… in that boy’s case, it seems something more dramatic has occurred.

When Shylock raised his hand up, a delicate, colorful plate appeared.

On top of it, colorful sablés appeared, overlapping with one another. He placed it on the table and sat down on the sofa.

Shylock: When life changes, people usually adjust in stages.

But… that boy didn’t seem used to his lifestyle at all.

People rarely lose everything overnight.

Murr: Also, we heard your story! The monster House Bernard sealed was the Valcy, right?

That’s an extremely high-level monster, you know. You’d need a ton of spirit* to fight off something like that!

Shino: Spirit?

Faust: The key is a strong will. You’ll need it in most situations.

Arthur and Mitile: Spirit…

Akira: Wow, it suddenly became a matter of willpower.

Faust: It makes sense. If one firmly believes that they are a servant of justice who must not give in to evil…

By utilizing the correct strategies and affirming his will, he manipulated both his body and his mind to confront and overcome the Valcy.

Shino: Cool. Faust, say that one more time, I wanna try too.

Faust: You never listen seriously. I’m serious: if you fall prey to a Valcy without the right convictions, you’ll lose both your mind and your body.

When that happens, you’ll become a blood-feeding monster, just like it.

Akira: Ah…

My voice raises in horror at his words.

Murr, who was lounging in the air beside me, raised his index finger, and poked my temple.

Murr: Valcy are famous for luring humans out with sweet scents and mysterious sounds before pouncing and sucking their blood.

When that happens, the Valcy’s poison enters the body and the human is overcome with the urge to drink blood.

Akira: People… drink other’s blood?

Murr: Yep! It’s only a matter of time before the  extremely abnormal drives the victim mad.

When that happens, the Valcy calls the victim back to its cocoon and sucks all their blood. That’s how it grows.

Mitile: It keeps getting creepier and creepier…

Shino: What a freaky story, it must’ve been some monster.

Arthur: Even if it is a magical beast, the idea of attacking people and changing their very being…

Akira: (To have your blood feasted on and even be cursed to become just like the monster that attacked you… the Valcy really are like the legendary Vampires of my world…)

Shylock: After securing some history books, it became clear that is exactly the reason why the achievements of the Bernard Family’s former head are so glorious.

For a legendary creature like the Valcy… to remain sealed to this day is no small feat.

Murr: But no sealing technique can last forever. Maybe the secret passed down through the family heads is the key to maintaining it?

Shino: A secret technique… like what?

Murr: I dunno! But there are a lot of weird things about that town: The Valcy, the street attacks, and the wallet got fuller too!

Everyone: …What?

Murr: When I got my wallet back from the boy, there was a little more inside!

I wonder if his funds got mixed with mine when it dropped on the road?

Akira: That’s terrible… we should go find him and give it back.

Shylock: This must be causing him some trouble.

Shino: That’s fine with me, I wanted to go back and get lemon pie anyways.

Let’s ask him to show us his medals too, if you’re curious maybe you can even check on the seal while where there.

Arthur: I’d also like to accompany everyone.

I’d love to hear more about him of course, but I’d also like to ask about the incidents.

Murr: Yay~! We’re all going out again!

Mitile: U-um… is it alright if I go too?

Shino: Why? Do you also want lemon pie?

Mitile: Well, there’s that too but… if his situation is like everyone says it is, like Shino’s was, then he may not be such a bad person right?

I judged him too fast without knowing anything, but… if there’s something I can do to help him, then I’d like to do that!

Shino: …Is that so? Then you come too.

Mitile: Thank you!

Arthur: Master Sage, I look forward to working with you!

Akira: I am as well! It’s better to go as soon as we can so…

Faust: Wait.

Shino: What?

Faust: If you’re planning on visiting that town and the boy’s mansion, you’ll need to prepare.

Can you give me some time?

The True Meaning of Iron in the Blood of the Fallen:

Part 2:

(Location: Central Kingdom, City of Honor, Day Time)

Passerby: Hey, you…

Suddenly, a suspicious voice spoke. A man, seemingly a passerby, looked down at the boy with his eyebrows knitted together.

Boy in a hat: Mister…

Passerby: So you're still in this town? Crawling on the ground in such a state…

Even now, do you fail to realize that your stubbornness is a stain on the Bernard family’s reputation?

Shino: Bernard…?

Boy in a hat: …

Passerby: I don’t know what it is you're trying to do, but if nothing else, live up to your name.

I can’t take seeing this anymore…

As the exasperated man turned and left, Arthur lowered his voice and turned to ask the boy something.

Arthur: Are you alright? Something must be bothering you…

Boy in a hat: Ah…

The boys eyes refocused on Arthur. As if to confirm the sight in front of him, he blinked repeatedly, his mouth slightly ajar.

Boy in a hat: Um… are you perhaps… a member of the Granvelle Royal Family…?

Akira: Aah…

Arthur: Oh.

Arthur’s eyes widened and he put a finger to his lips.

The boy suddenly whispered.

Boy in a hat: I-I’m sorry, I probably shouldn’t be yelling your name in the street…

White: What a sensible child. Though I am surprised that even children like you know Arthur’s face, even if this domain is situated near the Royal Capital.

It seems as though anonymity will prove more difficult, as of late.

Shino: Hey. Just now, that man called you Bernard.

Thats the same name as the hero in this book. Are you his descendant?

Shino looked at the boy, his voice innocent.

However, the boy lowered his gaze, avoiding Shino’s eyes.

Boy in a hat: Yes… I am the only one in this town with that surname…

Arthur: I see… you… the esteemed Bernard family has existed since even before the Central Country was established.

Faust: If he’s from such a family, it isn’t strange for him to know Arthur’s face.

Boy in a hat: … The only admirable thing about me is that name.

Like that guy said earlier… I don't even deserve that…

The boy muttered softly, before turning his back on us and looking over, his sincere eyes, locking onto Arthur.

Boy in a hat: You are a great person who will one day carry this country on your shoulders. I apologize for disrespecting your friends.

I thought I was simply picking up a lost item, I was even thinking of delivering it to its owner but… I am ashamed of my own shallowness.

For me to run away like that, I must have been tempted by the darkness*, because I didn’t have enough money to buy bread…

I will accept any punishment you bestow upon me: even death.

Akira: Death…?

White: There is no need to go so far to repent. Right, Arthur?

At Snow’s cue, Arthur nodded gently.

With a beautiful gesture, he knelt down in front of him and spoke softly.

Arthur: Punishment is about justice. Even if I did order such a harsh sentence, it would only cause more suffering for everyone involved.

Additionally, Lord Oz is a kind man, he wouldn’t be angry at someone for merely bumping into him.

As for Murr, I believe he only wanted to play with you, who found his wallet.

Murr: Yep! I just wanted to play!

Shylock: My apologies, this man is merely a harmless stray cat.

Oz: Children tend to run recklessly.

Arthur: See, that’s what everyone thinks. And in any case, you don’t hold any sincere malice.

That’s why, I believe simply returning the wallet would be fine. What do you think, Murr?

Murr: Great-!

Boy in a hat: … hic… thank you very much! I’ll return it immediately.

Murr: Yay! Thanks a lot!

Once Shino released the restraints, the boy brushed his clothes off and stood up.

As he bowed politely and handed the wallet to Murr, his stomach growled audibly.

The boy looked embarrassed as he held his thin stomach.

Faust: Are you Hungry?

Shino: If he had so little food he would resort to messing with other people's things…

Boy in a hat: No, umm…

The boy, who ackewary held his arms close to his body, wore frayed clothes that revealed his bony limbs.

Looking through the gap between his long bangs, I saw dark circles under his eyes.

Akira: (As Shino said, maybe he’s having trouble making ends meet.)

Shylock: <Invibelle

As Shylock chanted a spell from beside the boy, a package wrapped in pale particles of light presented itself before him,

Boy in a hat: Is this magic…? Are you also a wizard?

Shylock: I am, in fact. If you’d like, please accept this.

It’s a bit small, but I wrapped up a few leftover cheeses and dried fruits from my store.

Boy in a hat: H-huh…?

White: Hm, it was a good idea to buy pastries as well as churros.

Let’s take a look at what we have and find something to share, Oz.

Oz: Come to think of it, I do have your luggage… This biscuit.

Arthur: Then my contribution is thus: nuts I smack on whenever I get hungry.

Akira: I’d also like to donate the candy I have on my pockets !

Murr: I’ll give you something too: this sandwich I just bought and bit into!

The boy’s eyes widened as food piled up in his hands, creating a small mountain.

Boy in a hat: Are you sure it’s alright? I’ve revived so much…

Shino: Take whatever you can get. You’ve gotten lucky.

Faust: I can’t ignore the fact that you’re a troubled child, but don’t do anything bad from now on.

Faust said as he added a package of dried meat he’d taken from his pocket, and added it to the pile.

A small smile appeared on the boy’s face.

Boy in a hat: *Hic* I won’t. Thank you, how can I ever repay you…?

But suddenly, his eyes widened, as if hesitating.

Boy in a hat: Umm, you didn’t hear this from me, but if you’re visiting this town, you may not want to stay for too long.

There’s been a lot of trouble lately.

Shino: … What’s been happening?

Boy in a hat: There have been demons lurking*  around these streets.

No one’s seen the culprit yet, but all the victims have strange scars on their necks, as if they were bitten by something…

Murr: You mean there’s a serial attacker on the loose? **

Arthur: That’s quite worrisome to hear.

Akira: To think something like this is going on, even though the town seems so peaceful…

Boy in a hat: Yeah… fortunately, there don’t seem to have been any casualties. Even still, isn’t it super creepy?

You have all treated me well… I don’t want anyone else getting hurt, so it’s best if you head home as soon as you’ve finished your business.

Arthur: …

Boy in a hat: Then… I’ll leave you here. Please, be safe.

Shino: Hey, you…

Grasping Shino’s outstretched hand, the boy bowed his head, as if saying goodbye.

Then he ran off into the alleyway.

Shino: He… smelled like blood.

Akira: What…?

White: Perhaps he was injured. Though the severity of their situations differ, children like that exist in all countries.

Murr: Even so, he didn’t seem too attached to money or food. He was pretty well behaved!

Shylock: His family is quite reputable. Perhaps something serious has transpired.

If he’s recently found himself in need he must feel quite lost and confused.

Arthur: It sees something quite nefarious is happening in this city. I hope he stays safe…

Faust: …

As Arthur spoke in concern, Faust stared at the alley where the boy had disappeared.

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor, Common Room, Night Time)

After dinner that day, I shared chocolate tarts with Shino, Arthur, and Mitile in the common room.

Mitile: This chocolate tart is delicious, thank you so much for bringing me back a souvenir!

Akira: I’m so glad you like it! Thank you for working so hard today for your test.

Shino: It’s a reward for both of our efforts. Though, I planned on getting lemon pie.

Arthur: Unfortunately they were sold out. We selected these on the shopkeeper’s recommendation.

Akira: That’s right. But lemon pie will get its revenge soon.

A peaceful atmosphere, like sharing snacks with friends after school.

They each looked relaxed, stuffing themselves with tarts and chatting, as Shino was engrossed in his new book.

Akira: Shino, that’s the book Faust bought you today, right? What is it about? I’m also curious about the heroes from your world.

Shino: Alright? This book is a detailed record of events from over 400 years ago.

It’s the story of the head of the Bernard family’s exploits. He's Known as an “Unsung hero”*** from a war-torn time.

Mitile: An Unsung Hero…! That sounds cool!

But why is he “unsung”? If you’re called a hero, doesn’t that mean you’ve done some kind of amazing deeds in public…?

Arthur: Central Country before the founding of the Granville dynasty is known as the harshest time of the warring states era.

Until King Alec led his revolutionary army to establish the Central Country, our region was in constant turmoil, with battles constantly raging in most areas.

The head of the Bernard family during that time was a famous general who fought well.

Faust: …Heroes have no faces or shadows.****

Akira: Faust.

I hadn’t noticed until he spoke, but Faust had entered the common room, speaking to us from the entranceway.

Noticing the book in Shino’s hand, he made his way over to us, putting his hand on the back of the couch we were sitting on.

Faust: The Central Country of that time was a lawless land.

As fearful humans and doubtful wizards fought each other, misinformation spread rapidly, and nefarious beings took advantage of the confusion.

Among them, the one that settled in that area was the most brutal.

I’ve come across legends about it before. It’s called…

Shino: Valcy. An ancient magical creature that feeds on human blood.

It’s in the book. It was on the test too.

Akira: Could that be the creature in the picture you showed me earlier…?

Shino: Yeah. The creepy thing that looks like a red cocoon.

Translator’s notes:

*The specific word used here is 魔, which is commonly translated as “the devil” or “evil spirits”.

**連続通り魔事件 Literally means many “cases of attacks on the streets”.

***影の英雄 Literally means “Shadow Hero” or “Hero of Shadows”. In this context, it refers to his deeds going unnoticed, as if he’d performed them in the shadows, where no one could see.

**** 「英雄に、表も影もない。」Literally means “heroes have no faces nor shadows”. In this context, Faust means heroes have no identities: their “faces” which make them distinguishable individuals, or “shadows”: their legacies. This is related to the fact that Bernard is a hero “without a shadow” or “unsung”, and similarly, Faust’s true fate and legacy went unrecorded by history.

The True Meaning of Iron in the Blood of the Fallen:

Part 1:

(Location: Central Kingdom, Magic Manor, Library, Night Time)

One night, I went to the library to look for a pen I’d forgotten.

Akira: (Oh? There’s light leaking from under the door. It’s pretty late, I wonder if anyone is still there...)

As I peeked into the room, Saku-chan, who was floating around my shoulders, moved to copy my movements.

Shino, Mitile, and Arthur: Zzz…zzz…

The three sleeping boys were Shino, Arthur, and Mitile.

Pens, notebooks, and textbooks, were spread between their sleeping forms.

Mitile: *Muttering*... Jeez… Dr. Figaro...

Arthur: Lord Oz… the star-shaped pot-au-feu carrots were wonderful...

Shino: Hehe, look at me, Faust...

Akira (Hehe, it looks like they’re dreaming. But if they stay here, they might catch a cold…)

Shino: Hm…?

Mitile: *Yawn*

Arthur: … ah, Master Sage?

Akira: Oh, I’m glad you’re up! Just now, I was wondering if I should wake you.

Were you all studying together?

Shino: Yeah, there’s a test in class tomorrow. This is the final push.

Mitile: Shino wants to surprise Faust by getting a good score!

I also have a test coming up, so we were reviewing together.

Arthur: When I heard about their study session, I requested to join as well.

We were quizzing each other just now, but it seems we fell asleep without realizing.

Akira: On top of our missions, you’re all doing your best to study too… you’re all amazing!

Shino: Well, yeah. I used to think lectures were a meaningless waste of time but… I’ll to anything to become stronger. I don’t want regrets when I die.

Shino flipped through the book in front of him.

In the past, I might’ve been surprised to see him at a desk, but now it’s different.

Underground waterways. Artificial wizards. I’m not surprised because I know of the deadly battles he’s overcome.

Suddenly, Shinto’s grave expression shifted to a mischievous grin.

Shino: Look, Sage.

Akira: Woah?! What exactly is… this?

A picture made of frightening brushstrokes covered the page he’d pointed to.

A huge red mass covered the center, connected by long thin threads, like a spider web.

Surrounding it, were people folded on top of each other, as if tangled in the strange threads.

Akira: Is this… a red cocoon…?

Arthur: Yes, this type of magical creature has been passed down through legend since ancient times.

Though as the number of humans increases, they are forced out of their homes. I hear not many still live…

Mitile: It seems tomorrow’s test will be about the ecology of magical creatures!

Shino is particularly good at this.

Shino: Yeah. This monster emits a sweet scent and makes mysterious noises in order to attract humans into its domain.

Then, it extends thin, thread-like tendrils that suck the blood of any who approach.

Akira: Sucks their blood… does the creature in this cocoon grow by using human blood as nutrients?

Arthur: I believe so. They appear out of nowhere, build a nest, and spend a long time inside their cocoon…

In most cases, they are exterminated during that time, so few records exist of their actual appearance.

Mitile: That’s kind of creepy, a blood sucking monster with an unknown appearance…

Akira: It’s almost like a scary urban legend… it’s creepy because you don’t know what you’re looking for…

Shino: Don’t worry. If it’s just a big lump, I’ll cut it in half in one strike.

Arthur, Akira, and Mitile: So cool!

Shino: Hehe, that’s right. Though just to be safe, let’s review one more time.

Arthur: Yes, I’ll join you as well!

Mitile: Me too!

Akira: I see everyone still has energy! In that case, I’ll bring you some tea and sweets for your study session!

Shino: Oh, that’s really nice of you.

I got a ton of sleep so this’ll be fun.

I’m looking forward to the test tomorrow.

(Location: Central Kingdom, City of Honor, Day Time)

A few days later.

Akira: Shino, once more, thank you for your hard work!

Arthur: What a wonderful outcome! It’s probably the best score so far.

Shino: Well classroom lectures are nothing compared to hands-on practice. Experience and are important too.

Faust: Don’t get too comfortable just because everything worked out this time. Though certainly, it was quite an exceptional score.

Saku-chan: …!

Akira: I think Saku-chan is praising you. You worked hard together, right?

Shino: If it’s an achievement that even a spirit can understand, it means I deserve a great reward, right Faust?

Faust: Well, you did perform exceptionally. Are there any famous lemon pie shops around here?

Akira: Arthur recommended one. It’s only a little further down that way, but I didn’t know there was a town like this nearby.

It’s probably because of the old buildings, but there’s a really calm, nice atmosphere.

Arthur: That is because the “City of Honor” is a city with a long and rich history.

The lemon pie shop I visited on my last incognito visit was delicious, so I’d love to recommend it to you, Shino.

Shino: It’s probably not as good as Lady Blanchett’s, but I can try it and see if it compares.

Let’s bring some for Mitile too, he has a test today too, after all.

White: Hello everyone! I apologize for the wait!

Oz: …

Akira: White, Oz.

Arthur: Welcome back! Were you able to buy the heart-shaped churros?

White: Everything went smoothly, but afterwards, something caught my eye, and we ended up on a detour, right Oz?

Oz: I was only there to carry your baggage.

White: Don’t say such dreary things. Once in a while, it’s nice to tour a new city together.

We’ll return to the Manor with the new sweets we bought.

And, aren’t you planning to partake in Snow’s afternoon tea, while he keeps an eye on the Northern Wizards?

Oz: Have you only just now received this news?

Faust: Honestly, I was under the impression that Oz was invited here by Arthur but…

Arthur: No, I was the one who extended the invitation.

This town boasts many beautiful historic buildings, so I thought Lord Oz could enjoy it as well.

Besides, we’ve all undertaken so many missions as of late, so it’d be nice if we could use this opportunity to rest.

Oz: …You are who continues to carry out official duties.

Once you have settled your business, rest early today.

Arthur: I will!

White: He’s not so obedient anymore though~

Shino: …

Akira: Shino, is something wrong?

When I looked over, I saw Shino standing in front of a store.

The elegant shop was lined with delicately decorated stationary, colored glass, lamps, and tableware.

Shino reached for the corner of a shelf and traced the cover of a book.

Shino: “Bernard’s Legend of Heroes”…

Akira: Bernard… is that the title of the book? Is it some kind of biography?

Faust: It’s a heroic legend passed down through this city. There should be records of it in the Central Country’s history books.

Arthur: Indeed. Bernard is the name of a famous general who ruled this area during revolutionary times.

In honor of his bravery, this town was named after his achievements.

Shino: A hero whose deeds were published and whose name remains even today… did you ever meet him, Faust?

Faust: Not really, his time was years before I was born.

Shino: Hm…

Shino picked up the book and flipped through the pages before turning it around and tracing the cover once more.

Faust: …Alright. I’ll buy it for you, so be sure to read it.

Shino: Are you sure?

Faust: Reading is a good habit, so take this chance to develop it…

???: Wait, wait!

*thump*

Oz: …

???: … ow!

A boy jumped out of a nearby alley, and slammed into Oz.

Immediately, coins scattered in all directions.

Oz: …

???: … S-sorry…

Akira: Are you alright? Let me help you with your money…

???: No, I can do it myself…!

The boy, who looked at Oz with fear, before crouching down to collect his coins, seemed to be around Shino and Arthur’s age.

Murr: Oh? It’s Master Sage!

Shylock: Oh? It seems everyone has gathered together.

Akira: I didn’t expect to see you both here…

White: What? Have you ever visited this town before?

Murr: Yep! Im chasing this kid right now!

He took my wallet~!

Akira and Arthur: What?!

Boy in a hat: ah, no, this is…

Shino: Are you a pickpocket?

Shino grabbed the shaking boy’s wrist, before turning him around.

Boy in a hat: !

Murr: Ah, Shino caught him!

Shino: How unfortunate for you. You should be more careful about choosing your targets.

Faust: Shino, don’t be too rough.

Shino: Yeah, I know.

Shylock: Wonderful, what a bright and youthful look.

Shino: Thank you. What business did you have in this town?

Shylock: We came to stock up on alcohol and visit our favorite cafe. There are many hideaways in such an old town.

That’s where we had an unexpected encounter with this young man.

White: I see, but you aren’t the type to allow yourself to be robbed.

You could’ve stopped anything with magic. Don’t play around with his heart too much.

Akira: What…?

Murr: After all, that kid picked up the wallet that I just happened to drop, and started messing with it.

Peeking inside, looking around, with changing expressions, behaviors, and gazes…

Wouldn’t it be a shame to stop the movements of the heart that manifest in all sorts of ways?

Faust: So you purposefully allowed him to take it?

Murr: Yes? When I called out to him just before he was gonna stuff it in his pocket, he freaked out and ran away.

I felt like chasing so I did!

Shylock: It’s like watching a cat in front of a mouse.

I am at fault for failing to stop him sooner. Allow me to apologize on Murr’s behalf.

Akira: Not at all but… why would you do something like theft?

The boy probably realized that he couldn’t escape, so he stopped struggling.

His deep gray eyes peeking out from the brim of the hat caught sight of Arthur, and he gasped.

Boy in a hat: You are…

agirlattea: My cousin’s cat taking a nap (Default)

Sincerely, a Rainbow of stories for you:

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 12

(Location: Magic Manor, Shylock’s Bar, Central Kingdom, Night Time)

Akira: (I see...the Northern Country is a meritocracy, where only the strong thrive. It's a harsh place for humans to live, but because of that, Wizards hold strong positions in society.

From the perspective of Owen, a Northern Wizards who lived somewhere like that, of course something like this may sound strange.)

...Do you think so too, Bradley? That it’s strange for wizards to be chased out of their homes by humans?

Bradley: That's right: Cowards who run away after being mocked by mere humans lack pride.

If ya’ have power, use it and live as you please.

Akira: Power…

Rustica: A person’s Innate strength is their hands and feet.

To that young woman, seeing that world is nothing special. Just like we wizards use magic.

Akira: ...It's certainly something to think about. As you say, Rustica, whether it’s normal or special doesn't make that much of a difference.

I had heard that Luka was a witch with exceptional powers… I may have approached her like that too.

Akira: It's difficult. By trying to understand someone, sometimes you push them further away.

I feel a sharp pain deep inside my chest.

Shylock smiled at me elegantly.

Shylock: What a good night. Debates like this turn sweet alcohol bittersweet, and give it more flavor.

Special or not, the mystery surrounding the author Luka is certainly expanding.

The right to look into such a world is given only to eyes that have not yet been tainted… Isn't it like the beginning of a wonderful novel?

His flexible fingers raise the glass, and the ice makes a sound. I thought it was the sound of night falling.

(Location: Magic Manor, Courtyard, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Akira Thank you very much.

Rutile: Mitile, Riquet, if anything happens, make sure to report it to Figaro-Sensei and the others.

Mitile: Yes! I'll search diligently!

Riquet: Of course, Mitile and I will do our best! Please leave everything to us!

It was the fourth day of the exhibition. It had become a daily routine for Rutile and I to see off the wizards in charge of security.

Figaro: I’m glad to hear that everything seems to be running smoothly so far.

Akira: Yes, but I heard it's very crowded every day. I hope things will stay safe until the end...

Figaro: I'm sure it'll be fine, leave it to us for today.

Looks like Leno will be coming with me.

Lennox: Yeah. Rest assured, even if thieves break in, we did some training.

Akira: Training…?

Figaro: Rutile, if Luka comes to the venue, I’ll keep an eye on her. I'll let you know if anything happens when we get back.

Rutile: Thank you very much. It's a simple request, but I'm sorry I can't accompany you today.

Figaro It’s fine, keep up the good work.

Lords Snow and White reminded me, if something happens, I'll leave her to them.

Lennox: Even now, we are all connected to mysterious creatures that we cannot even imagine.

I used to live in the mountains, so there were times when I felt something strange when deep in nature or in places with strong magical power...

I'm a little worried about a child facing that presence alone.

Mitile and the others, who finished preparing for their departure, appear as Lennox speaks calmly.

Mitile: Figaro-Sensei, Mr. Leno! We have to go soon, the exhibition's about to start.

Riquet: Tardiness is strictly prohibited. We must fulfill our responsibilities properly.

Mitile and Riquet: Well then, let's go!

Akira Please come back safely!

Astride their brooms, the wizards soared through the sky.

Rutile and I watched until they were out of sight.

Akira: I the exhibition can continue without incident.

Rutile: …Yes, I hope her new work can be unveiled safely.

Rutile gently traced the cover of the picture book she borrowed from Arthur and spoke softly, as if praying.

Akira (Huh…?)

Suddenly, sparkling, rainbow colored scales seemed to sparkle in Rutile's hands.

However, they disappeared in the blink of an eye, melting into space.

Was what I saw now... an illusion?

(Location: ???)

Luka: (I wonder what this nostalgic smell is… A distant season...the smell of sunlight…)

…Ah. I started remembering little by little. It was… a hot afternoon.

I ran, ran, ran... before I knew it, I had passed through the forest and found myself in the city.

I was supposed to be fleeing from people who did terrible things, but I ended up wandering into a place with lots of people.

I sat down at the base of a tree by the street and cried a little at the faint smell of the tree.

At that moment, something landed on my head suddenly.

A hat that smelled like fragrant wheat: I thought that was the smell of sunlight.

When I looked up, I saw slightly tanned skin and  amber eyes.

That person asked "Are you lost?".

A human. If I don't run away, something terrible will happen to me again.

That's what I thought, but the soft smell of sunlight made me feel at ease and suddenly I was tired…

I shook my head slowly.

I'm not lost. Because there's no one looking for me.

...I had been walking for days, and at that moment I finally lost consciousness. The next time I woke up, I was on a fluffy bed.

There was a wet towel on my head and a gentle voice at my bedside.

"How are you?"

I heard the sound of the window opening, and the sunset-colored wind gently swayed my hair.

I could see thin clouds through the window.

A beautiful color: a mixture of yellow flowers blooming under the pale red sun, with just a hint of verdant grass.

I want to draw those clouds.

With that thought in mind, I absentmindedly surrendered to the wind.

"Hey, did you draw this?"

Eventually, the man shyly showed me a thin stack of paper and asked me.

I draw pictures of scenery and creatures whenever I feel like it. My own world...

I quickly snatched back the stack of papers.

Being able to see that world makes it difficult to live in this one. Even though I was young, I knew that.

“I apologize for looking at something so important to you without permission,'' the man said, bowing his head sheepishly.

His bright hair swaying in the evening wind reminded me of a wheat field.

...Ah, that's why it smells like sunlight.

I wondered why I thought so. But I thought so anyways.

Like warm sunlight.

The man spoke with a serious look on his face.

"You paint a very beautiful world."

“Like a daydream I had when I was young:  beautiful and somewhat sad, like a memory that lives on in a corner of my mind...''

Then he handed me a clean sketchbook and new art supplies.

“...I want to know more about you and your world. Could you please draw more?"

“Of course, I won't force you, but... You're good at drawing, so I thought you might like it."

The person laughs, a slight wrinkle forming at the corner of his eyes. It was the first time I made someone laugh like this.

I wonder what that feeling was. My chest felt warm and somehow sad...

“Oh! Why are you crying!?”

The man dropped the art supplies in a panic,  leaving them scattered as he looked into my face.

“Did you not like it? Or are you hurt somewhere? Your eyes will get swollen if you cry too much. We should use cold water and a cloth…”

Luka: Hey, what color are those clouds?

"Huh…?"

I pointed out the window, at the strangely colored clouds. The man leaned forward and put his hand on the window frame.

“Well...it's just dusk, so I think orange is safe. No, maybe it's vermilion..."

Luka: Yellow, pale red, and bright green.

That's how it looks to me.

Suddenly, eyes brighter than the setting sun, He turned towards me.

Involuntarily, my shoulders trembled. But the usual, scathing words didn’t come.

The golden eyelashes that framed his eyes blinked a few times in curiosity.

 “… Is that so?”

“You live in a beautiful world, don't you?"

He laughed a little, like a child.

I panicked, trying to think, to come up with something.

None of the quickly changing expressions on his face were the cold ones I knew.

The first person who didn’t deny me and my world. He said she wanted to know more, without ever calling it creepy...

“Ah... that's right. I'll be calling you often, so If you don't mind, may I ask for your name?"

I can see my reflection in his straight, Amber eyes.

…Maybe I was a lost child after all.

There was someone here who could find me.

Luka: Luka.

What's your name······?

Luka: How nostalgic… it makes me feel a tingly in the back of my head.

Roxy... Roxy...! Oh, thank goodness, here you are!

It looks like you’re napping... yes, I was dreaming… a nostalgic dream.

…Ah. I hear a voice from outside the picture book, it sounds like Aslan is calling...

But I wonder why... I'm very sleepy… like my body is saying it doesn't want to wake up…

I… I wonder why I’m so sleepy…

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 11

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Murr: Ahaha! Your sugar got eaten!!

Rutile: Well, it’s fine, I can still release make more! <Ortnik>......

Shino: No. Great job, Mithra.

Akira What?

Arthur: That’s right. See Luka? He ate one and he’s fine.

Luka: …

Luka shrank back and lowered her eyes at the sudden attention. She didn’t look scared, but confused.

Akira: Luka... Can I have one too?

Large lilac eyes blinked twice as I gently picked up the sugar that Rutile remade and bring it to my mouth.

Akira: ...Yes, it's delicious. Rutile sugar has a gentle taste.

Rutile: Is that so? I'm happy to hear it.

Once Luka saw this, she timidly picked at the sugar, and with slightly trembling hands, brought it to her mouth.

I could hear the cute sound of sugar rolling in her little mouth.

Luka: …!

It’s delicious...

Immediately, Luka’s expression softened and, like a flower blossoming suddenly, the air around her became soft.

Aslan: Luka…

Rutile: So you liked it! Luka, I'm so happy to see you smile. Your smile is probably better than sweet sugar: I think it has the power to cheer someone up!

Arthur: Indeed. And isn’t her complexion looking a little better?

Heathcliff: I think so. She’s not so pale anymore… I’m glad everything worked out.

Aslan: Thank you, everyone… It's been a while since I've seen her look like this.

Isn’t that wonderful, Luka? Let’s thank everyone for their kindness.

Shino: Look, isn’t this one of a kind?

Shino used magic to pick up the fallen picture and hand it to Luka. The ivy that had been writhing around had since calmed down.

Shino: It's an important picture book.

Luka: …Yes, thank you.

Shino: Hehe, you're welcome.

Murr: Hey, where's the sparkle from earlier?

Heathcliff: Sparkle?

Murr: The sparkles in every color of the rainbow! Didn't everyone see it?

Akira: Rainbow-colored... did it look like a magic powder?

Murr: Yes, that! Where did it disappear to?

Luka: Ah…

Looking confused, she hid behind Aslan's back again, holding the picture book in her arms.

Murr: Well, then. I’ll give you more sugar!

<Ernul Ranbul>

When Muru chanted a spell, a large amount of sugar fell from the ceiling.

Like rain illuminated by the sunrise, Like stars falling from the sky, Like petals blown along by a whimsical spring breeze.

It fell gently down on her.

Luka: …!!

Luka took a deep breath as her big eyes opened even further, sparkling as they caught the reflection of the sugar.

The expressions on the wizards' faces were strange, though naturally, I couldn’t look away from her. Rutile, standing next to me, was also captivate by the dazzling encounter.

Murr: Hey, wont you tell me?

Luka: …Um…

Oz: What is going on here?

Arthur: Lord Oz!

Luka: …!

Luka gasped and ran off, her silver hair swaying as she left.

Akira: Luka!

Aslan: ...I apologize on her behalf!.

Aslan bowed his head slightly, and followed after Luka.

Murr: Huh? Even though she seemed to like Sugar. I guess Oz's face was too scary!

Shino: In any case, what should we do? There's a sea of sugar all over the floor.

Akira Oh, that’s right!

Arthur: We must clean it up quickly. There are still other visitors here…

Mithra: Dis kina creening isn oo ad *Crunch crunch*

Heathcliff: Um… Mithra, what did you say just now?

Rutile: “This kind of cleaning isn’t too bad”… that’s great to hear!

Murr: Let’s fix it quickly with magic! <Earnul Ranbul>

Oz: …

While Murr chanted his spell, Oz stared silently in the direction Luka had run.

Akira: Is something wrong, Oz?

Oz:  That girl seemed strange to me. It is as if something that is supposed to be there is not... or perhaps it has not yet sprouted?

Akira: It hasn't sprouted...?

Oz: The source of all magical power……. the heart.

I slowly thought over Oz's words in my mind.

I looked at him questioningly, but he simply shook his head, swinging his long hair.

Oz: This is merely hypothetical. Magic comes from the heart.

More importantly, Sage, did you not hear that child’s story from that amber-eyed man?

Young wizards struggle with controlling their magic and are easily confused.

The twins are in charge of security at this exhibition. Just to be safe, I recommend reporting this incident.

(Location: ???, ???)

Luka: Hey, Roxy. Do you know Sugar?

A sparkling sweet lump like a star created by Wizards.

I wonder if I could make some too.

I've never done it before, so I don't know how but...

Hey, Roxy... My head is spinning, and I… feel restless all the time…

I don’t have much time left.

I have to finish the picture book as soon as possible.

After all, Aslan has worked so hard.

I don't know what I want to do. After all, once the picture book is completed...

The whole time I’ve been here it’s been so warm I almost thought I was back inside the egg but, right now I feel warm inside too.

Hey, where is the boundary between outside and inside?

If I stay here, I wonder if I’ll melt into this world like sugar candy.

Sweet, sweet, sugar candy.

Like the sugar I ate earlier...

Sweet… crisp... sparkling...

More… more…

(Location: Magic Manor, Living Room, Central Kingdom, Afternoon)

Snow: I see… in other words, the world depicted in picture books is neither a fantasy nor a fabrication of literature…

White:  But instead what a young girl named Luka actually saw through her eyes.

After returning to the Manor, I visited the twins with Oz, Arthur, and Rutile.

Akira: That’s correct. I didn't ask Luka herself, but that is what I heard from Aslan.

Apparently, she’s possessed these special powers since he was very young.

Rutile: Besides, when I saw Luka staring at an empty space, I heard her calling out for someone named "Roxy".

Snow and White: Roxy?

Rutile: Please take a look at this.

When Rutile opened the picture book, an illusion spilled out and a fluffy, rainbow-colored creature appeared.

Rutile: This is Roxy. In the picture book, she is depicted as a dear friend of a young girl.

White: Somehow, this is truly… a creature worthy of the title “mythical creature”.

Roxy is probably the name that that child bestowed upon it.

However, ‘tis rumored that this species no longer exists in this era. They have gone extinct.

Very little has been recorded about this species.  In the first place, they were always rarely spotted.

Akira: Now that I look closely… the creature by Luka’s side must have been Roxy.

Rutile: Yes, not the one depicted in this picture book, but the real Roxy...

White: Hmm. What do you think, Oz? You must have observed the girl in person.

Oz: Her magic was weak. However, she had a strange presence.

It would not be surprising if she had a connection with such a creature.

Snow and White: Oh…

(Location: Magic Manor, Shylock’s Bar, Central Kingdom, Night Time)

Shylock: I see… so she was able to draw such a details World because she’d witnessed it for herself.

Word of Luka’s special powers quickly spread throughout the Magic Manor.

The topic was also discussed at Shylock's bar.

Shylock: I must say I am quite interested in this world that the rest of us are incapable of viewing. I would love to speak to her about it.

Shylock's eyes narrowed and the corners of his mouth turned up as he smoked from his pipe. I was taken aback by his bewitching expression.

Shylock: Master Sage? Your face looks red. Even though I haven't given you any alcohol, have you gotten drunk, perhaps?

Akira N-no! Umm...

Rustica: Maybe you were the one who got drunk, Shylock, with that sweet smile.

Bradley: I'm sure this’d be too harsh on a child's tongue, though.

Shylock: Oh? It’s an honor. In that case, allow me to provide this service for you.

Looking at the glass Shylock held out to him, Bradley smiled, showing his canines.

Bradley: Hey, shopkeeper. What are you trying to do with me by serving me such hard liquor?

Shylock: I would like to introduce you to the comfortable world of drunkenness. Though, I don't imagine you to be the type who gets drunk on alcohol.

Bradley: You certainly have an interesting hobby. Fine, I'll go out with you. *

Clearing his throat, Bradley grinned and tipped his glass.

At the end of the counter, where a light drinking competition had begun, Faust sat at the bar.

Faust: However, I had no idea that Luca Carol was such a young witch.

Rustica: I was quite surprised as well. But I'm sure there is a mysterious world that can only be reflected through pure eyes.

I hear that young children are particularly sensitive to such things.

Akira: Snow and White also said that childhood is the time when most people, whether humans or wizards, have special powers unconditionally.

I've heard stories like that back in my world as well.

Faust: That's probably right. The degree varies from person to person, but children tend to possess sensibilities that adults lack.

Though they’re too young to handle them properly, all their senses are excellently sharp.

However, there are not even a handful of people who retain these traits as they grow into adults. That girl must have had a hard time not having many people who understood her.

Akira: Yes… it seems she didn’t have a very good environment until she was taken in by Aslan.

Apparently her struggles stemmed from others seeming her mysterious world to be “creepy”…

Owen: No matter how weak she is, she's still a witch. What is there to struggle with?

Akira: Owen…

Owen, who was sitting on the sofa, leaned heavily against the backrest, arching his body.

He turned his head in my direction and continued speaking.

Owen: Even if a Wizard is abandoned, they can live on their own.

It’d be fine to just wield that special power to keep others away or make them fear you.

Translator’s note:

*I kid you not, he said “付き合ってやるよ”. I did some research and in this context “付き合っ” means “date” and “てやるよ” would mean “I will”, so congratulations ShyBrad/ BradShy shippers!

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 10

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Aslan: No actually… it’s the world she sees.

Akira: ?

Suddenly, I remembered Snow and White’s words.

The world in the picture books actually exists, but it would be impossible for most to witness it.

Akira: …I heard that even powerful wizards are seldom able to witness that mysterious world. Is Luka… really able to do so?

Aslan: Yes, though it’d be hard for us to imagine such a thing…  As long as I can remember, that child has had the ability to see such sights.

Although we cannot, she can certainly see the mysterious world that exists there.

The flowing celadon colored clouds and the dark blue lake that sparkles among mysterious swaying grass and fragrant flowers…

Akira: … By any chance are there rainbow colored butterflies and fluffy animals running about?

Aslan: There are. Everything Luka draws is real scenery she’s seen.

Akira: How can you be sure? You aren’t able to see it yourself…

Aslan: Haha, you’re right about that. At first, I’d believed that all wizards were like that. They are said to be mysterious beings who see things humans can’t.

Luka was actually the first Wizard I’d met. She spoke so happily about invisible scenes painted in different colors than the ones I could see.

I was always thrilled to hear her stories and see her pictures.

Aslan’s gentle voice was tinged with sincerity. The way he spoke excitedly reminded me of a boy yearning for the unknown.

Aslan: I wasn’t really surprised when I later discovered it was a rare talent. No… maybe deep down I already knew.

That child is beloved by her mysterious world. The way she depicts it really makes it seem as though it exists alongside her.

Despite the gleam in Aslan’s eyes, there was a slight gloom there as well.

Aslan: However… though she’d been blessed with these abilities since she was born, it seems it was difficult for others to understand her.

Her words were labeled lies and delusions and were shunned. It seems she was treated quite harshly…

I imagined it as I heard his slightly hoarse voice. Certainly, you can't share what your eyes perceive and your skin feels with those around you.

My heart ached as I remembered how she looked down, her heart closed, as if she was afraid of something.

Akira: Um… what about her parents? Luca is still a child. As far as going home…

Aslan: I don’t really know the details, but it doesn’t seem like she has any relatives.

I came across her when I was visiting the eastern country to collect Art. I came across her on the side of the street and took her in.

Back then, it did not seem that she was well.

I think that I made the right choice back then, but in the end, I was the one who was lucky to meet her.

Akira: Eh?

Aslan: I was the one who fell in love with her talent.

I thought his eyes, containing no lies or hesitation, were like warm sunlight.

Aslan: The only things she had with her were a thin stack of paper and a tattered wood pen.

Then suddenly, a breeze blew the bundle over and I was moved by the world I saw.

It really was beautiful… full of mysterious charm I’d never seen before, it made my heart melt.

At first, no matter how much I tried to tell her that, she wouldn’t accept it. It was as though her heart, which had endured solitude with no one believing her for such a long time, refused to believe in anyone else in turn.

Aslan closed his eyes, as if overcome with nostalgia, and took a deep breath.

Aslan: She is a calm and delicate child, just like the world she depicts. I want many people to learn about her and her world.

Akira: Your message will get across; I’m sure of it.

When they see the world depicted in that picture book, they will surely be absorbed and fascinated.

I was, and I’m not the only one: everyone at the manor, from the children to long lived wizards, were impressed by the world Luca drew.

Aslan: Oh… Thank you very much!

I want many people at the exhibition to see her work, and for her to gain her confidence once more.

That’s why…

???: Aaaah!

At that moment, I heard a loud noise and screams that followed it.

Aslan: That was Luca’s voice-!

Muttering that to himself, Aslan took off towards the source of the screams, and I followed.

When we arrived at the picture book exhibition area, I saw Luca’s small back crouched in the center.

Rutile was beside her, holding her shoulder gently, and Heathcliff was there too.

Akira: Rutile, Heathcliff! What happened?

Looking around, I noticed a large picture book had fallen next to Luca.

Something like ivy was growing from the open page and wiggling around.

Aslan: Luca, could it be, again…

Luca: I-it’s different.

She whispered, shaking her head. Her confused expression made her seem very upset.

Heathcliff: Um… she didn’t do anything wrong. We were the ones who surprised her.

Rutile: When I called out to her, she was surprised and dropped the book. Isn’t that right, Luca?

Luca: …

Suddenly, my vision sparkled like an optical illusion. It looked as though rainbow colored scales appeared out of nowhere and danced through the air surrounding Luca.

Luca: … Roxy.

Luca muttered, staring blankly at the empty space.

Akira: (…Roxy?)

Aslan spoke, while gently patting Luca’s back.

Aslan: Luca, I’m not angry, let’s calm down a little.

Everything is okay. Your exhibit will work out just fine. There is no need to feel anxious, because I am here with you.

Your world will make everyone happy, I guarantee it.

Luca looked down without saying a word, her mouth closed tightly.

Aslan gently placed his large palm on Luca’s head and lowered his eyebrows, as if he was scared.

Aslan: I think she’s a little tired, as her new work is nearing completion. It’s her first time having the opportunity to exhibit her works and I think she’s been nervous for a while.

Aslan glanced at the Ivy growing out of the fallen picture book and let out a breath.

Luca’s thin silver hair swayed as she snuggled close to Asan, but neither of them said a thing.

Heathcliff: …We wizards use our hearts to create magic. That’s why, when our hearts are not calm, our magic power is not stable and we cannot control our magic properly.

Luca: Magic with… your heart…?

Heathcliff: Yes, I also sometimes feel uneasy and find it difficult to use magic…

Heathcliff smiled slightly, like a soft breeze, and continued speaking.

There was an irresistible gentleness in his voice.

Akira: … I understand. My heart, too, gets stiff when I am nervous, and then I only become more anxious when I realize I can’t move as I want…

This is true for me, even as a human, so it must be even more difficult for those of you who use magic with your hearts.

Come to think of it, when I first came to this world, and I still couldn’t tell left from right, I was nervous.

What calmed me down was that blonde person.

Heathcliff: It was… me?

Akira: Yes, when I first woke up at the Manor and we made breakfast together. At that time, he gave me sugar and I felt my heart relax.

Heathcliff: Ah… that’s right.

How nostalgic, I’m a little embarrassed, but I’m glad to hear you say that, Master Sage.

Luca: …Sugar?

What fell from Luca’s pale pink sips was anticipation as sweet as powdered sugar.

Still clutching the fabric of Aslan’s suit, her big eyes looked towards me.

Rutile: Luca, put out your palm.

As if invited by Rutile’s soft smile, Luca stretched out a small palm, resembling a maple leaf.

When Rutile’s fingertips lightly grazed Luca’s palm, star shaped sugar appeared.

Luca: …!

Amazing: it appeared from nothing! Is this… magic?

Rutile: Yes. Wizards cannot create something from nothing, but we can create sugar from magic.

Luca, if you eat this, you will feel better and your heart will calm down. You look a little pale right now, but if you eat this I’m sure you’ll feel better.

Luca: This is sugar…

Shino: You’re a Wizard and you didn’t even know that?

I turned, hearing a familiar voice. Without my noticing, Shino was standing next to me.

Arthur, Mithra, and Murr were also there. They all probably came when they heard the commotion.

Luca: …It’s small, like a star. I should eat this?

Rutile: Please, go ahead!

Akira: It’s sweet and very delicious.

Luca: …

Confusion and curiosity swirled in her big eyes that stared down at the sugar.

At that moment, a long arm suddenly stretched out and snatched the sugar from Luca’s palm.

Akira and Rutile and Heathcliff: ?!

Mithra: *crunching noises* *

Akira: M-Mithra…!

Translator’s note:

*The sound Mithra makes is バリボリ (baribori) it is an onomatopoeic word denoting the eating or chewing of something hard.

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 9

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Owen: Wait, didn’t I tell you to open a door back to the Manor?

Mithra: That was my intention, but this person here doesn’t seem to listen even when I tell them that, so it seems my plans have been averted.

Why don’t you go around with someone as well? I thought I saw Cain upstairs…

Owen: Why Sir Knight? And in any case, I saw Oz with him. I wouldn’t go on pain of death.

Mithra: Then should I kill you?

Owen: Ha?

Mithra: Shall we test to see if you really don’t want to, even if you're dead?

Owen: …You’re the one who can’t understand the things people say…

Figaro: Wow, this goblet is beautiful. It looks like a vintage piece.

Snow: Indeed, I sense depth from the many years it’s passed through.

White: Old things tend to have a noble quality and dignity.

Snow: This was created sometime, somewhere, by someone who poured their whole heart and soul into bringing about its existence.

White: I feel as though I can sense a part of the creator’s life through this goblet.

Figaro: Human lifespans are certainly much shorter than ours, but this is well crafted.

Since their lives are so short, they hurry to leave behind something of value… sounds like a stressful sort of life.

Still, I don’t think my own way of life is necessarily bad… I’d like to look a little better though.

Snow: Oh no, Figgie.

White: Are you feeling emotional?

Figaro: Hahaha, not at all. I merely thought this goblet was good at conveying the weight of history.

Murr: Heyhey! You’ve been saying it looks old for a while, but this goblet looks completely young!

The three of you are much older- of course I am too!

Snow & White & Figaro: …

Figaro: What an outrageous thing to say to a young person like me.

Snow: That’s right!

White: What's so old about these pretty twins?

Murr: Everything!!!

Snow & White: Murrie, be quiet!

Shylock: I must apologize, has my cat gone and done something rude again?

Figaro: Not at all, just the usual. In any case, “my cat” is quite the expression. I'd like to hear it again.

Murr: I think so too! Does Figaro also want to be treated like a cat?

Shylock: Oh my, will someone of your size be kept by me?

Figaro: I’m a little different from Murr though… anyways, are there any benefits to becoming a pet cat?

Shylock: Let me see... You can enjoy exciting dawns, sensual middays, passionate dusk, and sensational nights.

Snow: That’s a rather extreme lineup.

White: The children shouldn’t hear it.

Figaro: It’s an interesting offer if true, but wouldn’t it be a bit difficult?

Shylock: May I ask why?

Figaro: You don’t enjoy the things you don’t want.

You’re generally one of the tamer Western Wizards, but you’re still quite fickle.

Shylock: Haha… how observant, but isn’t that up to you?

Figaro: Oh, don’t say that.

Murr: Then I’ll tell you a fickle story too! Shylock, you also think this goblet is old right?

Shylock: It certainly appears to have stood the test of time…

Murr: Exactly! But you yourself are definitely much older than this goblet!

Shylock: …

Figaro: … Oh, I was actually planning on taking a look upstairs.

Snow: What a coincidence, we were too!

White: Right, let’s go!

Murr: Everyone’s leaving? But the fun is about to begin!

Shylock: Haha… Murr… would you repeat what you said just now?

Cain and I followed the sound of clanking armpit and found the suit walking around on its own.

Cain: This is the suit of armor that was walking around on the first day. Did you go off on your own again?

The armor stopped its course and bowed respectfully to me.

Akira: Umm… it’s nice to meet you.

Cain: It’s quite a gentlemanly suit of armor.

The armor turns and bows to Cain.

Cain saluted in return. The shadow of a soldier overlapped with his dignified profile.

Akira: As expected, you look really cool!

Owen: Praising him just for saluting… Master Sage, don’t you think you’re spoiling him too much?

Akira: Owen.

Cain: Weren’t you leaving?

Owen: The door that was supposed to open remained closed, so now I’m stuck here. How annoying…

Suddenly, the armor made a clanging noise and knelt down to Owen who was complaining.

Owen: …? What is this?

Akira: It seems to like you.

Cain: The armor seems to respond differently depending on the person it’s faced with.  What’s the criteria…?

Oh right, we’re supposed to return this armor to the exhibition hall. Hey, would you mind helping us out?

Owen: No way, I was just passing by. Good luck with that.

Cain: Hey look, it’s staring at you like it’s waiting for instructions. Wanna try saying something?

Owen: How should I know? I’m not its master.

With that, Owen turned on his heel and left, however the sound of armored footsteps trailed behind him, noisily.

Owen: Shut up! At least walk quietly.

Akira: That… is the direction of the armor exhibition hall.

Cain: I’ll go ahead and keep an eye on them. It’d be bad if that guy’s mood changed and he destroyed the suit of armor.

Akira: Then I’ll take a look at the exhibits around here.

Cain: Understood. Hey, wait for me!

I watched Cain leave before looking up at the crafts lined up on the walls.

Then, I heard a soft and gentle voice call out to me.

Aslan: Master Sage.

When I turned around, I was met with a pair of straight amber eyes. Aslan smiled gently, put his hand on his chest, and bowed gracefully.

Akira: Mr. Aslan

Aslan: I apologize for approaching you while you are occupied. The other day I failed to even introduce myself properly…

In addition, I heard that the Sages Wizards are personally overseeing the safety of the venue. How can I express my gratitude?

Akira: Please don’t worry, there’s no need for that at all!

I’m pretty sure that everyone is still enjoying the event, even while on patrol. Of course, I am as well.

Aslan: Oh, I’m relieved to hear that. That’s what I thought as well, everything here is quite a marvelous sight isn’t it?

Akira: Yes, definitely. There are still many areas I have yet to visit, though. Is Luka here with you today?

Aslan: She’s probably somewhere in the venue. That girl is quite absent minded and fickle.

Just when you think she’s disappeared, she appears again suddenly. That’s why you can’t really leave her alone…

Akira: (That kind of sounds like everyone back at the manor. They are Wizards, after all…)

Aslan: She’s kind of like… a cat.

Akira: Yes.

Aslan: Oh, sorry for the weird example.

Akira: Not at all! Actually, I thought the same.

Aslan: Is that so?

Akira: Yes!

Involuntarily, my face breaks into a smile. Though we’d only known each other for a short while, our similar thoughts made me feel close to him.

Akira: Wizards are blithe and free. Honestly, sometimes I feel jealous of that. Because they are people who value their hearts…

Aslan: I know what you mean! Sometimes, I wish that I could live like that too.

Ah, honestly, it’s a little strange to be able to share my feelings with you like this.

Aslan, who seemed a little excited, let out a sigh to compose himself.

Aslan: Umm… do you ever have a hard time being with the wizards?

Akira: …Well… I can’t really say it out loud but… sometimes…

I answered shyly, scratching my cheek.

Aslan gave me a mischievous smile in return.

Aslan: We’re the same, then. *

His amber eyes narrowed, making him look younger.

At first, I had been a little nervous speaking to him because he was the son of a noble family, but his friendly smile made him seem like an ordinary young man, just like Cain and the others.

Akira: (I can’t believe I’m able to share such a secret story with someone who also shares their days with wizards.)

But… Luka is really amazing, being able to create a world like that despite being so young.

Even the long-lived wizards were surprised. Of course, Luka’s painting skills are remarkable, but the subjects of the paintings themselves are all very rare.

Did she research the spirits and phantom beasts for her picture books from literature?

When I asked my question, Aslan’s eyes widened a little. However, he immediately smiled kindly and shook his head.

Aslan: No, actually… it’s the world she sees.

Akira: ?

Lennox: That's right. Although progress is being made slowly, It's not about making money, it's about living.

Bradley: What a waste. Aren't people in the south interested in making money?

Faust: … There are Livelybirds here, they’re the highest quality edible bird.

Bradley: What?

Nero: What?

Faust: Nero, what would you do?

Nero: Umm… it depends on the type, but I’d probably squeeze it and make it into a stew? Why do you ask?

Faust: I can’t make soup as well as you can, so I think I’ll just watch them flap their wings. Even though these birds are the highest quality for consumption, I don’t hate watching them. Just standing here doesn’t feel like a waste at all.

Bradley and Nero: …

Faust: By the way, I’ll be looking forward to trying the stew.

Nero: Haha...are you asking for food or preaching philosophy? But I guess I'm in the mood for stew tonight.

Faust: I see. I'm looking forward to it.

Bradley: What a bland and Eastern conversation. Anyways, they probably won’t even notice just one going missing… It’s pretty clever to use us as security, but I can’t forgive ‘em for thinkin’ all the Sage’s Wizards are goody two shoes. Hey, isn’t it pretty bold of ‘em to throw a thief into a treasure trove?

Faust: Who knows. If you want to go back to prison, I won't stop you.

Bradley: I can't get enough of it. Well, I'm not the only one with bad habits.

Nero: What? Don’t look at me while grinning like that…

Bradley: Don’t be so embarrassed. Hey, take a look at this.

Nero: Oh, as expected, that's pretty impressive…

Faust: Hey.

Lennox: You guys.

Nero: Huh?

Bradley: Yeah?

Lennox: What are you going to do with that gem? Or rather, when did you even grab it...

Nero: ! N-no, this is...

Bradley: Haha... Don't listen to nonsense like that. What else can you do with a jewel except put it in your pocket?

Faust: Do you really want to go back to prison? Stealing during a mission… are you really so eager to return to prison? Oz and the twins are still in the building, you know. And Nero, you’re really going along with a thief like Bradley?

Nero: Well, no, this is...um… training!

Faust and Lennox: Training?

Nero Of course. Our mission is to guard the venue, right? Even though our main purpose is to watch the magical exhibits, there's no guarantee that no one will try to mess with valuable items like these.

Lennox: I see....... so you were testing our awareness?

Nero: Exactly. Isn’t that right, Brad…ly?

Bradley: What a pain.

Nero: Bradley!

Bradley: Hey hey, you're right. All I did was go  along with the training. A real thief just showed you all an example, so grateful.

Faust: Sigh...well, it’s definitely good practice for dealing with theft.

Lennox: Indeed. Bradley's presence was as expected, Nero is surprisingly good at imitating thieves.

Nero: Haha, thanks...

Faust: But Leno, during an actual situation, it would be better to neutralize the threat without waiting to ask questions, instead of calling out to them like I did just now.

Lennox: I understand.

Faust: The next stop is the floor below. Let’s go.

Lennox: Of course.

Bradley: ...You have a troublesome way of dealing with people. You really can't drop your bad habits.

Nero: Well...I'm just a humble cook. Please put that jewel back, though.

Mitile: Don’t the sheep look so stylish?

Riquet: They look like rainbow colored clouds.

Chloe: I think they look like Murr’s fireworks!

Mitile: Everyone's interpretations are different, but I can’t find the title of the exhibit anywhere…

Riquet: I cannot see it either.

Chloe: Hmm… I wonder what the picture is supposed to be?

Riquet: Then, let us combine everyone's opinions into "clouds dyed in rainbow colors surrounded by fireworks launched by Murr".

Mitile: My stylish sheep weren’t included!

Riquet: That’s true… then perhaps “Sheep who have been dressed up by wizards gazing at the rainbow clouds by Murr’s fireworks”?

Chloe: So their fluffy wool is completely dyed by magic?

Riquet: How is it?

Mitile: I like it!

Rustica: What a lovely painting. It looks like you are all having fun too.

Chloe: Rustica! Hey Rustica, what do you think this picture looks like?

Rustica: Hmm, I believe... it may be the fresh salad I ate this morning?

Chloe: We’ve added another idea!

Mitile: But maybe we can still figure it out somehow...?

Riquet: That must be a tomato, and this may be...

Chloe, Mitile, and Riquet: Aparagus!

Rustica: Oh? That's strange,I do not remember asparagus being in the salad. I was happy to eat it, but I feel as though the salad had a bittersweet taste.

Chloe: What kind of salad is that?

Rustica: Itvwas a mysterious salad that felt nostalgic even though it was my first time eating it. As you can see in the painting, there were many different things mixed together, it was quite lively, and very delicious. Oh?

Mitile: Ah!? Please look over here…!

Riquet: The picture is moving!

Chloe: I wonder what... did the painting just change into text? It's says "change."

Rustica: I'm sure that's the name of this picture. Maybe he told us because we were discussing it. Haha, thank you for your polite response.

Riquet: Is it the work of a magical mechanism?

Mitile: I'm sure it is. I'm glad we were able to learn its proper name!

Riquet: However, it may be moving due to the  influence of the <Great Catastrophe>...

Chloe: If that’s case, I wonder if it’ll be able to return to its original form. If it can’t, doesn’t that  mean we changed the picture?

Mitile: What? I-is that so!?

Riquet: Oh, It started moving again!

Mitile and Riquet: P-please change back!

Chloe: Oh, it’s back to its original form! That’s good…

Rustica: Indeed, after all, one’s original appearance is the most lovely of all.

Shino: Mithra, Owen, where are you going?

Mithra: I am returning to the Manor, why?

Owen: It’s none of your business anyways. Mithra, hurry up and open the door.

Shino: Hah, I knew the two of you would run away. There’s no way you’d be interested in art.

Owen: Who’s running? Besides, you don’t care either

Shino: At least I understand better than either of you. I am in service to the famous Blanchett family.

Mithra: But you are not interested, are you? You are chasing us around, after all.

Owen: Where is your beloved liege now? I wonder if he felt annoyed at such a loud guard dog, and sent you away.

Shino: What did you say?!

Rutile: Oh, Mr. Mithra!

Heathcliff: So this is where you were, Shino.

Owen: Oh good, your master finally came pick you up.

Shino: Watch yourself.

Heathcliff: W-what happened? You have such a scary look on your face…

Owen: Your little guard dog was pretending to be useful before he realized his master didn’t want him and he started crying and howling.

Shino: I wasn’t crying, don’t just say weird things.

Mithra: You did not deny being left behind.

Shino: Shut up.

Heathcliff: I’m sorry, Shino. I was looking for a specific exhibit, and before I knew it, we’d been separated.

Owen: This one didn’t deny it either.

Shino: Be quiet. How dare you interrupt Heath.

Shino Don’t apologize, Heath. It’s a servant’s job to stand back while the master has fun.

Heathcliff: Don't say that, I was looking for you. I finally found a place in the exhibition that interests me.

Shino: Are there any machines or contraptions? You said you wanted to see them.

Heathcliff: The selection is amazing. It's a spring-style wind-up toy, but it turns in the opposite direction than is usual, so let's go see it together. You might be bored though…

Shino: I’ll be waiting here. You should go take a look around by yourself. It'll be more fun for you if you go alone than if you watch it with someone who doesn’t know much and can’t appreciate it.

Heathcliff: Shino…

Shino: I don't want to interfere with the things you love.

Heathcliff: …I see. I apologize, my request was unreasonable.

Shino: What? Why do you suddenly look lonely? Fine, I guess it can’t be helped: I'll go around with you. What a spoiled guy…

Heathcliff: Whose fault is that? But thanks.

Owen: Tsk, what a boring conclusion.

Mithra: What do you want? ...I am beginning to feel fatigued.

Rutile: Let's go see the exhibition together! There are artificial flowers that pass as real, and elaborate mechanical dolls on display.

Owen: Did the moon curse any of those so that you die if you touch them?

Mithra: Is there such a curse that attacks people when they get close?

Rutile: There don’t seem to be any changes like that so far, so don't worry.

Owen: Really? What a letdown. Let's go back to the Manor after all.

Mithra: I will do the same. If anything happens, please blow that bird whistle and I will rush to your location right away.

Rutile: In that case, can I blow it now?

Mithra: Did you hear a word I said? Please don't blow it for no reason.

Rutile: But my reason is that I would like to tour the exhibition with Mr. Mithra. Don't you want to share a fun experience with someone else? I'd like to find out more about your feelings and the things you like, would you please tell me about them?

Mithra: Sigh…

Rutile: Hey, come on, let's go!

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Figaro: That plan sounds good. That cunning tendency you two have, I don't hate it.

Snow: Then feel free to join us, Figgie.

White: We’ll go all out to win everyone over!

Snow & White: Yay!

Figaro: As you should. After all, we are “good” wizards.

Following the fading sounds of chattering voices disappearing into the back of the venue were Murr and Shylock.

Murr: Hey, do you think it would be easier to win over the guests if something terrible happened?

Shylock: That may be the case. However, to wish for such a thing before an incident even occurs...

Murr: Do I have to stay out of trouble?

Shylock: Not at all. You are free to do as you wish.

I’d never wish for such an incident but… the immorality of expecting such an event is irresistibly tempting.

Murr: What a nice expression! Incidents are exciting!

Shylock: Fufu. However, that may not be our role this time. I’m afraid it’d be all too easy to forget what is expected of us while engrossed in these strange exhibits.

Murr: Well, that’s fine! It's a waste not to enjoy the fun things in front of you before they’re gone!

Shylock: Yes, let's go. To truly enjoy this invitation.

A few paces ahead of them was Faust. Lennox's large shadow trailed not far behind him.

Faust: I don't really feel like going through with this, but... it can't be helped now that we’ve already accepted.

It would be inconvenient if something were to happen and they blamed us for not being able to handle it.

Lennox: Once again, your words are misleading, Lord Faust. You mean to participate in order to spare the younger wizards from criticism in case of an emergency.

Faust: You’re wrong.

Lennox: I have a rough idea of the venue’s security arrangements. I do not believe there are any weak points.

Faust: I thought the same... it's a pretty large venue, so it seems the magical exhibits are scattered throughout. Let's go up to the top floor, and make our rounds as we head down.

Lennox: I will accompany you.

Faust: Very well. If anything unusual occurs, I’ll investigate first. While I do that, you should guide visitors away from the area… wait no. Why are you even following me? Go somewhere else.

Lennox: If an incident does occur, I believe it would be best to respond in the way you suggested.

Faust…

Lennox: Should I leave?

Faust: I understand, do as you like.

Lennox: Thank you, I will.

Nero: Y’know, Riquet, the party on the last day will have a buffet.

Riquet: What is a buffet?

Bradley whistled as he snatched the informational pamphlet that Nero attempted to show Rike out of his hands.

Bradley: Y’ take as much food as you want ‘nd pile it onto yer plate.

Which ones to choose… well, isn't this a large selection? As long as I can eat my fill, I don't mind attending the party at least.

Riquet: Getting to eat everything I want… I feel as though I will fall into depravity.

Bradley: What’s wrong with that? You’ve never been to a place like this before, right? You should just do whatever you like.

Riquet: I will not. And it’s easier to lose your way among so many options.

Nero: That’s fine. There are lots’o high quality options ‘ere, and it’s yer dinner, so it’s okay to indulge for a bit.

Riquet: …Really?

Nero: I’m sure they’ll also have your favorite: Bread Pudding.

Riquet: Will you make it for me?

Nero: I don’t make the food here though…

Riquet: Is that… so…

Nero: The chefs ‘ere ‘re better ‘nd more skilled than me.

Riquet: But I like your cooking.

Nero: Haha, it’s an honor. If y’ find anything y’ like let me know and I’ll make it when we get back to the house.

Bradley: Oh, isn't that nice? I guess you’ll need to try a whole bunch o’ new things.

Riquet: Okay!

Mithra: That is what a buffet is. If you do not finish every dish laid out for you, you will be killed.

Mitile: What?! No one’s going to die! All you have to do is pick out as much food as you like and eat it.

Mithra: How much is “as much as you like”? Does that mean I can eat it all myself?

Mitile: According to the rules, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it's not good to keep everything to yourself. We all have to share with each other.

Mithra: Well, it will depend on my mood. Where is the buffet displayed?

Mitile: The buffet isn’t an exhibit though…

Owen: It doesn't matter, I'm not interested in such a small reward. Can I leave?

Rustica: You can decide whether or not you are interested after looking around a little more.

There may be rewards that will make you much happier than parties and luxurious meals.

Chloe: That's right, it’d be a waste to miss a reward just because you left early.

Owen: There’s no way something that would satisfy me would be in a place like this.

Chloe: Where would it be?

Owen: …Somewhere?

Rustica: If it exists somewhere in this world, it may very well be here.

You may encounter it today, tomorrow, or even in a hundred years.

Owen: You’re so annoying. Can I cover that noisy mouth?

Rustica: If something is going to be covered, I’d rather it be my ears. When you cover your ears, you can hear the sounds inside you echoing, right? It’s so exciting to hear the voice of your heart. Go ahead and do so.

Chloe: Oh, everyone’s gone ahead. Look, Cain is waiting for us.

Cain: Hey! Don’t get lost.

Owen: Ha? Who’s lost?

Rustica: What should we do? Are you lost?

Owen: I’m not trying to be.*

Chloe: Rustica gets lost all the time.

Rustica: Haha, that’s right. But maybe I… maybe it’s because I want to get lost. Thank you, Chloe.

Chloe: Wait, why?

Rustica: I mean… I’m able to get lost because there’s someone looking for me.

Arthur: What is this statue...?

Cain: Arthur, did something happen?

Arthur: Look at this.

Cain: What a strange statue. There are so many  tails on the body. Let’s see… the title is... "Oz"?!

Oz: ...What has happened?

Arthur: Lord Oz! I-it’s nothing at all.

Oz:  You’ve seen the sculpture?

Arthur: Oh!

Cain: I thought it was some creepy monster, but it looks like it’s a figure of some legend about Oz. You sure have a lot of stories surrounding you, Oz.

Oz: I have no interest in what others say about me. Let the masses do as they wish.

Arthur: However...I cannot accept the display of a statue that claims to depict Lord Oz, but instead resembles a demonic beast rather than a person. I regret putting organizers in this position, but I must ask them to remove this statue...

Cain: Huh? The statue has a numberer next to the title. This one’s nine.

Arthur: What?

Cain: One two three… this corner is entirely sculptures of “Oz”.

Oz: There are roughly twenty of them.

Arthur: The entire corner depicts legends surrounding Lord Oz… did the artists research beforehand? The quality of these statues are amazing, but...

Oz: This one resembles the Leviathan, though the tail is now the head

Cain: Regardless of their image, they all definitely carry a dignified presence. It's certainly a sight to see so many "Oz" statues lined up. Hey Oz, could you stand over here for a second?

Oz: … Here?

Cain: Yep! What a cool sight. Next to all these statues, the real Oz looks like a piece of artwork.

Arthur: … Even so, these monstrous figures do not resemble Lord Oz at all. The real Lord Oz is the coolest!

Cain: That’s, right, he’s the best out of all of them!

Oz: …

Arthur: Oh! …Lord Oz, could you stand over here next?

Oz: If that is what you desire.

Arthur: Cain, what do you think? From this position, does it not look like Lord Oz has subjugated a gigantic monster?

Cain Definitely. He gives off the impression of absolute power! It definitely feels like he's the pinnacle of all the other Ozs.

Arthur: They are not Lord Oz.

Cain: Oz definitely looks powerful... but from this pose, it looks like it’d be difficult for your opponent to give up. Oz, could you move over there next?

Oz: …

Faust: They’ve collected so many rare gemstones from all over the world... I'm not particularly knowledgeable, but the quality of the items is apparent. It's clear the event is by an art dealer. He seems like quite a knowledgeable man.

Lennox: The venue’s security seems to be good, too. As Lords Snow and White said, he seems to be quite an influential person.

Nero: After all, the jewelry here is different from the ones lined up at market stalls. These ‘re every bit worth the value.

Faust: Leno, take a look. Apparently this ore is mined in the Southern Country. It’s quite beautiful.

Lenox: There is a lot of undeveloped land in the Southern Country. I hear the remote lands far from settlements are rich in minerals.

Bradley: Oh, so it’s like a treasure trove lying untouched? Sounds like someone could make a profit if it was exploited.

Nero: Brad... how long have you been here? I thought y’ left a while ago.

Bradley: If I’d left without permission, those damned Grandpa ‘d never shut up. Even if I’m just going through the motions, I still hav’ta be ‘ere. I’m any case, that ore looks like it’ll appreciate. ‘Re things like this lying all over the south?

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 6

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Akira: Rutile, are you worried about Luka?

Rutile: I am. Something about that interaction felt a little… concerning. Though I’d also like to just talk again.

Akira: The event will last for seven days, so I'm sure we’ll have an opportunity.

It seems like guests are welcome to visit as many times as we’d like...

At that moment, I heard a crunching sound beneath my feet.

When I looked down, there was a teacup on the table.

Rutile: oh?

Mitile: Why would there be a teacup in a place like this...?

When Mitile tried to reach out, the cup spun around and gently floated into the air.

In front of my eyes, it bent, as if to bow, and began to dance gracefully.

Akira What!?

Riquet: The cup is dancing...!?

Shino: There isn’t even any music playing.

Chloe: Is that the problem!?

Suddenly, a teapot and a set of silverware joined in, making cheerful clanking sounds.

Heathcliff: We were informed earlier that there would be some magical exhibits, is this what they were referring to...?

Cain: It's like a tableware party. Isn't that a really cool dance?

The teapot flapped its lid at Cain, as if extending a hand.

Cain: Oh, is that an invitation?

Arthur: It seems to be so. You can almost hear someone asking “Would you like to dance with me”?

Just as Cain and Arthur were about to join in the dance, an older gentleman arrived looking panicked.

Old gentleman; My apologies! They’ve run away from the exhibition hall again...

Arthur: They’re very energetic. Are they magical?

Old gentleman: Yes, in the past, I used them to pour tea and prepare meals…

But at some point, they suddenly started going out and dancing.

Akira: At a certain point in time...?

Aslan: Dad! The armor is moving on its own again!

When I looked up to the floor above, I saw Aslan around up chasing a suit of armor.

Old gentleman: Please guide it back to its original location!

The old gentleman let out a sigh.

Old gentleman: Even though it was quiet a moment ago… Just in case, it might be better to cancel the exhibition.

Heathcliff: ...May I ask you a question?

Old gentleman: Yes, of course. What do you need?

Heathcliff: The dishes learning to dance and the armor suddenly running… Do you have any idea how long ago these strange incidents started?

Old gentleman: Well... I believe it was around the time the <Great Calamity> struck.

The wizards all shared a look.

Cain: …Maybe the <Great Calamity> impacted the exhibit as well?

Arthur: There are many old artifacts on display... It's certainly possible.

However, I sense no sign of danger from this venue. Even if something strange is happening, I do not believe it to be harmful…

Akira: …It may be fine for not, but I’m still a bit worried.

During my time as Sage, I have seen many things change under the effects of the <Great Calamity>.

Rutile: So, how about keeping a lookout just in case? We can take turns patrolling the area.

Cain: I agree. Even if there’s only a slight change, it’d be better to have less concerns.

Old gentleman: Excuse me, is there a problem with my venue or exhibits? I will deal with it as soon as possible...

Cain: Oh, sorry for moving on so quickly.

Didn't you say earlier that your magical exhibits sometimes move more freely than usual? Like the teacup and armor from earlier?

Though it’s only a possibility, this may be due to the influence of the <Great Calamity>.

Old gentleman: The <Great Calamity>?!

Akira: I-It’s alright! Though, I’m sure it must be frightening to imagine the damage, the changes happening right now are very small, so I don’t think they will affect the exhibition…

Cain: Master Sage is right, but just to be sure, could we provide security for this venue?

Old gentleman: I cannot ask invited guests to do such a thing…

Arthur: I have no problem accepting. If there is a possibility that of an incident caused by the <Gr t Calamity>, then it is our duty as Sage’s wizards to intervene.

Additionally...my uncle gave me permission to handle matters pertaining to the exhibition.

I personally wish for the event to run smoothly , so that the visitors may enjoy the exhibits and come to appreciate both magic and wizards.

If we accomplish this, it might be another step towards building trust between humans and wizards.

Old gentleman: Prince Arthur...

At Arthur and Cain's offer, Riquet, Mitile, and the others seemed to be full of motivation, their eyes shining.

Riquet: Please leave it to us!

Mitile: I'll guard everyone well!

Chloe: Evenif something happens, we’ll solve it right away!

Heathcliff: In addition, we wouldn’t be able to visit all these exhibits in just one day.

Shino: If Heath wants to, it can't be helped. We'll personally keep an eye on the situation. Be grateful.

Akira: We were discussing coming back again earlier, so we might as well help out while we’re here.

Cain: That's how it is. We were planning on coming back anyways, so could you leave it to us?

Old gentleman:  Oh...what kind people! I was worried we wouldn’t be able to keep up with the incidents by ourselves.

I never imagined I'd be so lucky... It's truly a dream come true to have your cooperation!

If there is anything I can arrange to assist you, please let me know!

After saying that, the old gentleman bowed his head several times.

When Arthur and Cain put their hands on his back to try to soothe him, he was even more moved.

Eventually, he bowed deeply once more and we watched him leave with the teacups in hand. After seeing him off, Arthur turned back towards us.

Arthur ...Alright. Let's go back to the Magic House and consult Lords Snow and White.

The next day

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Snow: Has everyone gathered? I think I'll try doing a roll call.

White: Let's start with Central!

Akira: (Hmm? This feeling...)

The Central, Eastern, Western, and Southern wizards all answered the roll call.

Snow: As for the North....

Mithra, Owen, and Bradley: ……

Lennox: ...Something smells fragrant.

Akira: (...It's deja vu after all)

Smoke rose from various parts of their lenox ...It smells kind of fragrant. Akira ...It's deja vu after all)

Smoke rose from various parts of their bodies, as three sets of displeased eyes landed on Oz, who stood to a side with a cool expression.

Akira: I’d like to thank the three of you for coming. I...I'm very happy.

White: Thank you for your hard work, Oz.

Oz: I haven't faced any particular difficulties.

Bradley: Oh?

Mithra: Hmph

Owen: Is that so?

The bloodlust emanating from the three of them made my spine straighten. The atmosphere seemed to be tingling with tension.

Nero ...So, we’re security at the exhibition hall? What do we do specifically?

White: Something strange is happening to the magical exhibits. As for what to do when it happens, Arthur, Sage.

Arthur: Yesterday at the venue, I witnessed tableware and armor start moving on their own. There doesn't seem to be any danger yet but...

Many of the items on display are quite old, so there is a chance they may have been changed by the effects of the <Great Calamity>. An incident may yet occur.

Akira: Therefore, I would like to ask everyone to provide security at the exhibition hall for the duration of the exhibition.

However, we are still guests, so I hope that you can still enjoy the exhibition while patrolling...

Bradley: We’ll take care of any trouble, but did we really have to come all the way over ‘ere?

Snow: Don't say something so cold. Moreover, the organizer of this exhibition expressed a great deal of gratitude to us, and mentioned he would repay it.

White: You opportunities like this must be accepted graciously.

Owen: I prefer to trample on favors than receive them. Because I am a bad wizard. Shall I teach the two of you a lesson so that you never imitate Northern Wizards ever again?

Snow: I'm well aware that you won't listen to what I say, but if you act out you'll be the one to receive a harsh punishment.

White: It isn’t just Owen. Mithra, we will not allow you to go on a rampage either.

Mithra: It was Rutile and Mitile who wanted to come to this place, so I have no plans to do anything other than keep an eye on them.

Mitile: Wait, aren't you going to look at the exhibits? Even though we’ve come all this way?

Mithra: What do you do when you go around an exhibit?

Rutile: I suppose… you share your impressions about the works on display with the people your companions and discuss what you would like to see next?

Mithra: Then please go ahead. I will be lying here.

Rutile: I was under the impression that we could go together. Was I wrong?

Mithra: …? What would we do together?

Figaro: Hahaha You’re going around in circles.

Snow: Come now, we went to great lengths to clean the house the other day. We have practiced working together.

White: This time, the request will also help improve the reputation of the Sage’s Wizards in the public’s eyes.

Snow: Mithra, Owen, Bradley, no matter how much you wipe at the brutalities you have committed throughout your pasts, they may never be washed away. Why not start by lending a hand?

Bradley: You say things like that an awful lot for people who’re even worse than us. Have you finally gone senile and forgotten what country you belong to? Yer Northern Wizards, dammit.

Headless of Bradley’s retort, the twins continued enthusiastically.

White: The organizer of this exhibition seems to be a person of considerable power.

Snow: He will aim to retain his dignity at all costs by avoiding any catastrophes! Boom, suddenly he will owe us many a favor!

Snow and White: Yay!

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 5

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

Cain: I heard from Arthur that there’s a picture book drawn by a wizard author. I'd like to see it too.

Cain said, looking at the venue map in Heathcliff's hand.

Shino: Heath, didn’t you want to see a some trick? Look, it’s on the fourth floor.

Shino said, looking from Cain’s other side.

Heathcliff: It’s hard to walk with the two of you hunched over me.

It was kind of heartwarming to see them walking awkwardly like three people on four legs.

Chloe: Rutile! I asked the guide and it seems the book display is on the second floor. Luca’s picture book should also be there.

Rutile: Mitile and the others already went up to the second floor ahead of us. Let's stop to take a look at it as we make our way up the stairs.

At the end of the gentle spiral staircase, there was an exhibition hall for picture books. Several picture books were displayed on the walls.

We found Mitile and Riquet, who had arrived earlier, but when I was about to call out to them, Rutile stopped suddenly.

Akira: Rutile, is something wrong?

Rutile: Master Sage, that child…

Akira: …Ah.

I saw a familiar figure ahead, where Rutile's finger pointed.

Ahead of us, stood the lost girl from earlier and the young man who came to find her. He seemed to be talking to a well-dressed older gentleman.

Arthur: Master Sage, everyone, so you’ve arrived.

The next person to come up the stairs was Arthur, who had told us that he would head directly to the venue from Granval Castle.

In the back of the room, I spotted the figure of the older gentleman, who had turned his gaze towards us.

Arthur: I was just thinking of saying hello, so it seems I’ve arrived at the right time. The old gentleman over there…

Old Gentleman: Well, well, Prince Arthur!

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the old gentleman noticed us and rushed over.

After bowing his head deeply, he continued in a passionate voice.

Old Gentleman: Welcome to our rural castle! I thank you for your continued support!

Arthur: There is no need to speak so formally. This time, I’ve accepted your invitation not as the Prince of the Central Country, but as a Sage’s Wizard.

I am grateful to you for extending your invitation to us. This is the Sage, and some of my fellow Sage’s Wizards.

Old Gentleman: Yes, I know very well. What an honor to be able to meet you all like this...!

I will never forget the excitement of that time for the rest of my life! I’ve heard tales of your other exploits as well!

Oh, brave young heroes, thank you so much for saving the central country, and for working hard every day to save the world!

The younger wizards all responded to the handshake extended by the old gentleman.

Chloe: I-it’s an honor to meet you as well!

Mitile: We’re all so happy to have been invited!

Old Gentleman: … You are the Sage, aren’t you? I had the honor of seeing you for the first time at the parade.

Akira: I am honored to hear you say that, but... the ones who worked hard for were the wizards. They were the ones who fought the Umbra Volans and the ones who saved the city and fixed the tower.

Old Gentleman: Your humbleness is charming, but please don’t downplay your own achievements too much.

Without you, the Central Capital would be a city of the dead. I would like to see you take pride in that.

His warm and strong handshake made me feel ticklish.

Akira: Thank you. It would have been nice if we could all have attended, but unfortunately, the timing wasn't convenient…

Old Gentleman: Please do not worry! I hear the Sage’s Wizards are all very busy. I hope this exhibition offers you all a chance to rest.

Then, beckoned by The Old Gentleman, the young man and little girl from earlier approached us. Rutile's gaze naturally focused on the small girl.

Rutile: Ah…

Old Gentleman: Let me introduce you to my son who is helping me with this exhibition. Say hello to the Sage.

The young man’s Amber eyes widened in surprise at the words of the Old Gentleman, as he bowed his head hurriedly.

Aslan: My name is Aslan, I sincerely apologize for my discourtesy earlier! I had no idea that Prince Arthur and the Sage had already…!

Old Gentleman: Oh, have you already exchanged greetings?

Aslan: No, earlier when I was looking for Luca… hey.

That young man, Mr. Aslan, says the same name we heard him call earlier, and looks down at the girl hiding behind him.

"Luca". At the sound of that name, the wizard’s eyes meet.

Aslan: Come on, Luca, introduce yourself.

Prompted by Aslan, the girl took a step forward, her long purple hair swaying gently.

She was a very beautiful girl, however, her ephemeral outline that seemed to almost melt into the light around her seemed somewhat unrealistic.

Luca: ….

The girl called Luka glanced at me with her big eyes and turned away.

Aslan: Luca!

She flashed the hem of her skirt and hid behind Mr. Aslan's back. Large, slightly empty eyes peeked out from behind her bangs.

Akira & Rutile & Arthur: ….

Aslan: I sincerely apologize! She is still a child, or rather... she is still so young. Please excuse her rudeness.

Her name is Luca Caroll, the author of the picture books exhibited here.

At Aslan’s words, the curiosity-filled eyes of the wizards bare into her small body.

Arthur: I see, so you are the rumored…

Shino: I suspected as much when we met earlier, but you are a witch after all.

Riquet: You are also younger than I imagined, you seem even younger than Mitile and I.

Heathcliff: But even if she looks like this, she could still be much older than us.

Cain: You’re right, we do have Lords Snow and White as examples of that.

Aslan: Haha… actually she’s grown a lot. When we first met, she was a lot younger, weren’t you, Luca?

Akira: So…

Aslan: Yes. She is the age she appears to be. I was surprised too at first, but I will never forget the shock I felt when I first saw the world she drew.

Rutile narrowed his eyes fondly and nodded at Mr. Aslan, who scratched his cheek looking a little embarrassed.

Rutile: Me too. At first glance, I fell in love with her picture books.

He turned to meet Luka’s eyes, who was looking down, and smiling softly.

Rutile: It’s nice to meet you, I'm Rutile. I am a fan of your picture books.

Luca: …

Aslan: Oh, she’s turned away again. I apologize for her shyness, I’ll have her respond to you properly…

Arthur: Please don’t worry, it’s more than enough to simply meet such a wonderful artist.

Aslan: Thank you, Prince Arthur.

Heathcliff: Um, I had a chance to see the book as well, It was truly amazing.

When I was young, I dreamed of a fantasy world, and I was able to feel that dream coming to life…

Aslan: If I'm not mistaken, you are Lord Heathcliff of the Eastern Country’s house Blanchett...?

Shino: That’s right.

Heathcliff nodded modestly next to Shino who answered immediately.

Aslan: It's a real honor to have her work recognized by such dignified individuals! Isn’t that right Luca?

Luca: Umhm

Aslan: Her works are displayed on the wall over here. Please feel free to take your time and read carefully.

Akira: Thank you! Come to think of it, I heard that there will be an exhibition of Luca’s new works...

Aslan: Oh… that’s…

Mr.Aslan turned his gaze to the central space of the exhibition hall while muttering his words.

There was a gaping empty space there.

Aslan: We’d planed to hang it there. I apologize… even though you’ve all come all the way to visit us, the exhibition hasn't been completed yet.

Arthur: What do you mean?

Aslan: It is taking a while to prepare. I am currently working on writing the acclaim, hopefully, it will be completed soon.

Luca: ….

Luca, who was looking down slightly , held her mouth tightly shut .

Akira: Is that so? Well, I look forward to the completion.

Aslan: The exhibition will be held for seven days. We will be sure to have it completed by the end of the last one.

Additionally, we are planning to host a party on the last day. I hope you have a chance to enjoy it.

After saying that, Mr.Aslan bowed his head deeply and left with Luca.

Heathcliff spoke in a low voice as we saw their retreating backs.

Heathcliff: Is that child alright? I can't put it into words, but something feels strange.

Shino: I thought so too. Her skin was also so pale, it almost looked fake.

Mitile: I agree… I don't mean this in a bad way, but she almost seemed like a doll.

Riquet: It looked like she was overwhelmed, but…

Cain: She looked like a work of art. Her presence was almost otherworldly.

Chloe: But all artists are a little bit strange, even Rustica is like that.

Arthur: Certainly, I think artists do tend to have a unique atmosphere.

I think it's wonderful to have the personality of a splendid creator at such a young age…

Rutile: ….

Rutile silently stared off into the direction in which the girl left.

Mahoyaku Proposal Day 2023 Voice Lines:

Central Wizards:

Oz: Wizards don't make promises. If we break a promise, we will lose our magic. Even if you meet someone you want to spend the rest of your life with... don't make careless choices.

Arthur: The words "I swear that I love you" can surely strengthen someone’s heart. …However, I still can't imagine the day when I will be able to say it.

Cain: Maybe someday I’ll meet someone I love from the bottom of my heart, make a promise to marry them, and spend the rest of my life by their side. I’m sure that’s a form that happiness can take. But I'm still very happy right now. Because you and our other dear friends are by my side.

Riquet: A promise of marriage is also proof of sincere belief that one’s current feelings will never waver... I wonder if the day will come when I can meet someone who I feel for in that way. For now, I am still unsure…

Northern Wizards:

Snow: Many wizards are lonely. Some love solitude and end their lives that way. However, there are people like us who know the value of companionship. I can't imagine letting go of the hand of someone I love. Each person is free to decide who to spend their life with. Now, whose hand will you take?

White: Many wizards are lonely. Some love solitude and end their lives that way. But there are some, like us, who know the joy of coexistence. The happiness of having someone you love by your side is irreplaceable. Each person is free to choose what they love. Now, what do you love?

Mithra: Could you keep this for a moment? I’m going to use it in a magic circle to kill Oz, so I’m putting it on your finger so you don't lose it… The ring finger on your left hand? The finger it’s on doesn’t matter.

Owen: iIf you swear not to move or utter a word without my permission, if you swear you'll listen to me for the rest of your life, I might consider keeping you around for a little while. Perhaps I’ll even let you meow.

Bradley: Northern wizards tend to obsess over their prey. Even if their logic tells them they shouldn't, their instincts say otherwise. Once they’ve fallen in love... they won’t ever let go until they die.

Eastern Wizards:

Faust: Wizards can live alone. For us to find someone who wants to be with us… is surely something close to a miracle.

Nero: Getting married. Peacefully, calmly, without change. I could just be with someone I care about… What am I talking about? After all, something like that seems difficult for me to do.

Heathcliff: If I were to find someone so important to me that I’d want to marry them, I’d like to convey my thoughts to them on my own. “Years and decades from now, I vow to continue to love you and stay by your side…” I still don't have the confidence to look into someone’s eyes and say something like that.

Shino: I have no intention of making more troublesome promises for now. Even without any promises, I'll still risk my life to protect the person I want to cherish for the rest of my life. Is that not enough?

Western Wizards:

Shylock: I wonder if there will come a day when you will pledge your undying love to someone… or something. What kind of voice you have, what kind of face you’ll make, and what kind of vow you’ll swear… I must admit, I’m a little interested.

Murr: Is it true that when you make a confession in your world, you say, "The moon is beautiful tonight, isn’t it”? That’s the same thing I say to the moon! I might be able to get along with whoever came up with that phrase!

Rustica: A proposal is a precious, once in a lifetime promise. That's why I feel I want to cherish it. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the words I proposed with to my bride, but it is fun to think about what the old me would have said.

Chloe: “Please marry me...!” *Sigh* I was so nervous that my voice trembled… I wonder if it's still too early for me to practice proposing... But someday, when I meet someone important to me, I want to be able to properly tell them how I feel.

Southern Wizards:

Figaro: I wonder what kind of words you’ll use when you pledge your eternal love to someone. You can practice with me so that you don't panic when the time comes.

Lennox: A word of a promise, huh... I can't seem to think of any clever or romantic words. It might be better to study a little by reading poems and novels like the ones Rutile likes.

Rutile: I still can't imagine the day when I’ll promise to marry someone... but I want you to stay by my side forever. As our Sage and our dear friend.

Mitile: It's probably very difficult for a wizard and a human to get married. I wish I could ask Mother how she felt when she married Father…

Sincerely, a Rainbow of stories for you:

Please Tell Me the Story of the Rainbow: Part 4

(Location: Akira’s room, Central Kingdom, Night Time)

Akira: Yes?

Rutile: It’s Rutile. Is now a good time?

(Sound of door opening)

On the other side of the open door stood Ruitle, holding a familiar book to his chest.

Akira: Luka Caroll’s magical picture book….

Rutile: Prince Arthur lent it to me. If you don’t mind you you like to finish reading it together?

Akira: Really? I’d love to!

I invited Rutile into the room, and we sat side by side on the bed, with the book in between us.

Rutile: I heard from Mr.Cock Robin that all of Luca Caroll’s picture books are one of a kind.

It appears that these kinds of books are impossible to mass produce, and so she carefully draws each one using magic.

Akira: So this book is precious.

Rutile: That’s right. It’s the only one of its kind in the world. Just touching it makes my heart beat faster.

Rutile gently stroked the cover of the book, as if nostalgic for an old notebook.

Rutile: Well then, do you want to open it?

I held my breath as Rutile’s beautiful fingers slowly turned the cover of the picture book.

As he opened the book, rainbow colored lighted spilled from the pages like river water and spread across the carpet of the room like ink smudges.

A gentle breeze swayed golden buds, which bloomed into flowers and started to dance in the wind.

Mysterious creatures run across amethyst colored hills and soar through azure skies.

A fantastic world spread across my vision, like a melody flowing from a music box.

I held my breath at the sight as Rutile narrowed his eyes in fascination at the illusion that enveloped us.

Akira: “Magical Picture Book” is a perfect name for this one of a kind book.

Rutile: Truly, it's like a dream world…

Akira: What story is told in this book? I still can’t read this world’s characters…

Rutile: Ah. That’s right, sorry. The book is about a little girl who travels the world riding on the back of a butterfly-like creature.

The mysterious creature’s name is Roxy.

Akira: Roxy… the floating butterflies over there fit that description, right?

Rutile: You’re right! Their fluffy bodies are cute.

Akira: Their transparent wings are also beautiful… depending on how the light hits them, they change color!

It’s like their dyeing the wind in color every time they flap their wings.

Rutile: Wow Master Sage, that’s such a poetic expression!

Rutile: Roxy might not be a human or a wizard, but she’s a very important friend to this girl.

The overflowing love that this book manages to transmit really warms my heart.

Akira: I can’t read the story, but the flowers, grass, sky, clouds, and creatures…they’re all drawn so carefully…

Just looking at it puts me at ease.

This fictional world must be very important to Mr. Caroll.

Rutile: I think so too.

The rainbow colored butterflies floated gently through the picture book’s illusion.

I could almost hear the twinkling sound from the bring fluttering of their wings.

Akira: A dear friend who is neither human nor wizard…

Like Roxy and this child, it’d be nice if wizards and humans could come to understand each other better and become friends too.

Rutile’s encouraging nod was the motivation I needed to come to my decision.

Akira: To that end, I’d like everyone at the manor to attend the exhibition.

Rutile: It’s an exhibition where everyone can truly go enjoy the works on display, without distinction between humans and wizards!

Rutile gazed at the picture book with a face full of hope as he said that.

Akira: I’m excited!

Rutile: I am too!

I wonder if we’ll be able to find more works by Luca Caroll…I’m excited now, I don’t think I'll be able to sleep!

Seeing Rutile’s jovial smile reminded me of nights I couldn’t sleep before big events.

Rutile: Master Sage? Why are you laughing all of a sudden?

Akira: Haha, sorry. I was just remembering times I couldn’t sleep because I was looking forward to something.

Rutile: So even the Sage has had nights like that.

Akira: Yeah, like… the more I tried to sleep, the more awake I was. As if my heart was… how should I put it?

Rutile: Leaping?

Akira: Exactly.

Rutile: Like you can’t stop your heart from jumping around?

Akira: Yes!

We looked at each other and laughed.

Akira: I think I’ve just become more excited for the exhibition.

Rutile gently closed the picture book and held it tightly.

Rutile: I wonder what kind of person Luca Carol is?

Akira: I’m curious how he was able to draw such a pretty world. Snow and White didn't know much about it.

Though, Shylock said she might be a long-lived witch.

Rutile: Like this picture book, I’m sure he must be thoughtful and kind, though a little mischievous and cute…

I’m sure he's a very nice person!

(Location: ???)

???: This place is so warm. I’m sure this must be what it feels like inside of an egg. Don’t you think so?

Warm… protected… I feel very safe.

No… I felt safe… until now

You know Roxy, if I stay here I can meet everyone I love. Even hear them call my name…

But you know, I’m scared. A gentle voice… a nice figure… my favorite name…

It feels like the moment I close my eyes they’ll disappear. I’m afraid to leave this place.

I’m afraid of myself changing.

I’m afraid of losing something much more precious.

If this is an egg, I wonder if i have to hatch someday?

(Location: Exhibition at an Old Castle, Central Kingdom, Day Time)

A few days later, the day of the exhibition finally arrived.

The venue, an old castle, was bustling with people.

I, accompanied by a few wizards, look around the venue as I make my way to greet the nobles who invited us.

Akira: What an amazing castle! Is the entire building being used for the exhibition?

Shino: Is it even possible to see all of this in one day?

Cain: The list of exhibits was pretty long. To think they’ve collected this much!

Heathcliff: They don’t appear to have been collected randomly. The organizer must have carefully selected the pieces he thought were good… I can feel his commitment.

Chloe: All the guests here are so fashionable! I guess that must be because they’re interested in art.

Ah! That embroidery is beautiful! I’d love to see it up close!

Rutile: I’d also love to take a look!

Rutile, who stepped forward as he said that, bumped into a shadowy figure.

Little Girl: Oof

Rutile: Ah, I’m so sorry!

Little Girl: Umm…

She appeared to be a few years younger than Mitile.

Cain gently caught the petite girl, who looked confused.

Cain: Are you okay?

Little Girl: Ah…

The girl’s gaze was confused, as if dazed. Her large purple eyes swayed with anxiety.

Riquet: Are you lost? Did you come here with someone?

Little Girl: ….

Mitile: You seem to be lost. Do you recognize anyone around here?

Cain: It’s easy to get lost in such a big venue, but its alright now, you don’t have to worry.

Chloe: Then I'll call a staff member…

Suddenly, the girl grabs Shino’s sleeve, as he looks around with everyone.

Shino: …? You…

Little Girl: There you are!

I could see a young man walking towards us at a brisk pace through the crowd of people.

He had bright blonde hair and pale amber eyes. He was probably a little older than Cain.

Although the colors of his suit were subdued, the pattern of the shirt peaking out through the hem was stylish.

Little Girl: …

The girl let go of Shino’s sleeve and ran up to the man. She pushed her shoulders together, as if touching in wings and hiding them behind her back.

Young Man: I’m so glad I found you!

Excuse us, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Heathcliff: Are you her parent? I’m glad you found her, she seemed to be lost.

Young Man: The second I took my eyes off of her, I lost her. Alright, let's go.

Gently taking the girl’s hand, the young man bowed to us and left.

Young Man: Are you okay? I’ve been feeling a little hazy lately but… are you worried about me, Luca?

Rutile and Akira: Eh?

Akira: (Luca… could it be?)

The back of the young man and the girl quickly disappeared into the crowd of people.

Rutile: …

I was a little worried about the girl, but I decided to let the matter be and take a look around the hall.

Akira: It looked impressive from the outside, but the interior is even larger than i expected.

Heathcliff: Since the venue is so large, let’s check the map before we set off. Is there anything in particular you want to see, Sage?

Akira: You’re right… there’s so much to see, so I’m worried we won't get to them all.

Translator’s note: It appears that I’ve misgendered Luca. In previous chapters I referred to her as he/him, but it appears she is a girl.
